PotLuck Dinner Themes
« on: February 10, 2012, 12:42:44 PM »
Many of the members here are regulars at the Camping Rallies, and is customary there is usually a Saturday Evening Potluck Dinner. But lets face it, after a while, it gets a bit old. We have in the last few rallies been adding a Theme to the dinner that has been getting people motivated to try different things. I was very proud of the lengths people went to for the "Purple" theme dinner at Raystown Lake last year.

I would like to take the themes to the next level and want to get some suggestions. Listed below are some Theme ideas Peter and I have done in the past. See what you think would work for our next event and add some of your own.

Trailer Trash - This is a tongue and check takeoff since we all have "trailers". We did a Twinkie appetizer and a Velveta dip. This one works for a "appetizer" or game night, rather than a meal or in the case of a dinner, you provide 2 items, one fun and one normal.

What would Elivis Do (for dinner)

High School Cafeteria

Alphabet Soup -  With 26 letters to choose from, pick one and run with it! Things that start with "C" may become a creative cornucopia that can include chili, chowder, chicken, carrots, cauliflower, calamari, chips, cucumbers, corn, couscous, cake, coconut, cookies, curly fries, chocolate and candy.

The Last Meal - Choose any item to bring… as long as it begins with the first letter of their last name. Sarah Smith can bring spaghetti, Barbara Brown can bring buffalo wings, Mary Martin can bring mud pie and so on….and so on.

April Fool's potluck--all the food looks like one thing but is really something else. (For example, angel food cake sliced like bread with a spread in the middle that looks like ham salad or chicken salad.)

Red-White and Blue - every item must have all 3 colors.

I like the idea of changing it up.  I organize pot luck breakfasts at work every now and then and like you said...after a few, people are bored.  I would suggest checking what the "National Day" is around the trip.  February 23 happens to be National Chili day and we are going to do Chili and Appetizers that day at work.

For example - Camp Taylor trip 5/18-20/12 has 2 interesting things.  5/18 is No Dirty Dishes day and 5/20 is Pick Strawberries day.  The no Dirty Dishes meal could be interesting.

As a side note.....5/13 is National Leprechaun day.  Isn't that 3/17???????????

Sounds fun. "No dirty dishes" could be anything cooked on a stick (shish-kabobs). Sticks can be burned when finished.
