How long does it take to set up camp?
« on: January 07, 2011, 11:35:42 AM »
How long does it take everyone to set up camp?  I mean, from the time you arrive at your campsite to the time you have your favorite beverage in hand and relaxed?   It usually takes us about an hour, give or take 20 minutes.  That includes setting up chairs, getting water, maybe starting a firewood, etc.  Then there's the little things later like filling lanterns, remembering to let the kids out of the car and those type of things.

I can have the basics (Level, roof up, bunks out and gear inside) done without a sweat in about 30 minutes.  If I have help....45 minutes  ::)  Usually I will putz around for another 30 minutes putting the chairs in the right spot, stowing gear inside the pup, that sort of thing.

DW and I have a system that works with our 1 year old on the past 2 trips.  We take 2 vehicles.  I get to camp first and start setting up and she usually shows up 1 hour later.  Granted this only works when we are camping close to home but it makes it easier when they show up they can go inside or the pack n play is set up already.

Setting up for us is part of the camping experience.  Most people have to comment when they stop by us.
Camper, Gizmos, Family Signs, Parrots, Camp Kitchen, Spices and Utensils, Ice Chests, Grill, Stove, Awning, Rug, Add-a-room, Electric Griddle, Crock pot, Coffee Pot, Margarita Bar, 10'x10' canopy, table cloth, lawn chairs, tiki torches, trash can, awning lights, etc.

It takes 1/2 the weekend to set up (at least a few hours), 25% to relax and 25% to pack up.  :P

We're usually parked, leveled and up in about 20 minutes. Organizing the inside takes a little longer because I usually just throw everything in bags near the door, so it all has to be put away. Making the beds also takes between 5-10 minutes as well, we use 2" memory foam, sheet & blankets (none of which can't stay on the bunk when the camper is down).

Hmmm... Iwould say it take about 30 minutes if I can get the boys to stay and help.  Once I get it level, I have my "Jack Men"  crank down the stableizers.  Then the roof.  Dw sets up the inside while I get the beds set on the outside and everything else outside, rug, awning, stove, yell at boys for not helping  :ranger: , water, electric, yell at boys for not helping   :banghead:,  table, chairs, tell boys to go play since they are no help  >:(, firewood and sit and drink beer  :baseballhat:

Since we're still pretty new with pop ups it takes us a good 45-60 minutes.

If you've never seen an Apache hardsides go up, it's kind of cool.  It's not terribly different than a traditional pop up, just different.

Sometimes I miss my tents, but not so much that I'm putting the Apache away.

I am with Joe here, setup is part of the entire camping experience. Put the camper in postion, check out the neighbor sites, open a tastly adult beverage, raise the roof, stop and make a fire and get out the chairs. Finish the tastey beverage, setup the inside. Take a walk and figure out how I am going to decorate, etc.

My goal is not to put it up in any type of speed record, the whole point of camping is to have no schedule. Its NOT like from x-y do this, from y-z do this, from z-a do this.

If I wasn't relaxing and decorating, sure I could open it up and be able to lay down in it in about 30 minutes, but managing the whole site is part of it.

Time is never really critical.  slow and steady as i don't want to break a sweat.  I do the out side and DW does the inside.  The conclusion is the second pop of a top.
I usually don't need help or want it.  I have a set way to do it and help only throws me off.

DW would not be able to handle me taking all friday night to setup.  Like I said, 30 min and I can have the basics done and DW is OK with that.  Then I crack open a beer and move the chairs here or there, put the carpet down, unroll the sleeping bags or make the beds.

I have found that it is better to leave the door our until I am all done with everything since there is so much in and out.  What I want to try next time out is putting the supports on the bunk but not putting the canvas on.  Then just put the stuff right on the bunk and then pull the canvas over the stuff and set the canvas up.

Our set up is very similar to everyone elses. Get there, pop open a beer, level up, and start cranking up, run around for 5 minutes looking for my beer and realize I left it on the roof, get step ladder get my beer down, start setting up the canvas. Pop open another beer and start arranging things on the outside, DW does all the inside stuff! Then it's off to my find where I set down my beer! After finding it on the bumper of the Jeep or the Truck it's time to poke the head inside and see how DW is doing. If she's doing fine then it's time to set up my chair, end table and Ice chest so I don't have to get up to fetch the next beer.

90% of my set up time as you can tell is looking for my lost beer. I think this has to do with short term memory loss and age! To be truthful we don't get in much of a rush to get set up but I do like to get it done so the vacation can begin.

How much we set up and decorate depends on the length of stay, weather forecast, etc. I'm going to guess and say about 45min + an hour for beer locating.

It all depends.  Sometimes I don't even unhitch.  Just pull or back in.  It took about 1 minute to get the chair out.

it took us longer with the popups than it does with the hybrid.
it takes the two of us about 30 mins. to do a basic setup. that's not including leveling.
that includes unhitching, putting stabs down, putting out chairs/gear, dropping one bunk end down and setting up the canvas and making the bed.

It takes us a while since we are dealing with a toddler,  12ft pup w/slide bath/shower, gray water hose linking, and setting up the outside (grill, kitchen, mat, awning, screen room, and other things.
A good hour or more, and I honestly don't know why we didn't buy a hybrid :P

I would say about 30 min. or a bit longer.  DH does the outside and I do the inside and we make the beds together.
