June - how about Lake Raystown Seven Points campground?

Joe and I don't really camp in NJ...the state parks don't allow dogs (last time I checked). We do have a decent county park in Jefferson NJ (Mahlon Dickenson County Park). I could look into the specifics there, it is a small place, and we'd have to reserve early. But there are lots of nice hike/bike trails.

Dawn,

Whats in the area, I have yet to get out that way?  If theres a lot to do (enough toursty stuff to keep Melly happy) and you schedule mid to late June  We'd probally make it a week long trip.

If in June, it needs to be after the kids are out of school.  Esp. if its a long weekend.

Seven Points is a really nice place - 2 loops of electric sites. I believe the electric sites are around $25/night, and the sites were a really nice size.

There are boat/kyak/canoe rentals at the marina, a nice swimming hole (that allows doggies to swim with the people), a BBQ place at the marina, tons of great mountain biking  ;D and best of all - - - you can have a beer without being hassled by the rangers  ;D ;D ;D

We've been there 3 times in the last year, and are definately going back 1-2 times next season.

Dave -
There is alot of outdoor recreation things to do in the area boating, fishing, swimming, biking at the lake. I don't think there are any touristy things in the immediate area, you'd have to drive 1-2 hours. There are two railroad related spots:
Horseshoe Curve (http://www.wegoplaces.com/Attraction_46834.aspx) (Altonna - ~1 hr):
East Broad Top RR (http://www.ebtrr.com/index.php) (Rockhill Furnace- ~1 hr):

and Hershey Park/Lancaster County is about 2 hours to the east - - and there is a lot of touristy things there.

I have a feeling to make this happen, reservations would need to be made in December if your wanting to do this in June.  This is not the easiest place to get a good spot at being as it is so popular.

OK everyone, it looks like one of our options is Raystown Lake's Seven Point Campground.
There are two water front camping loops, not sure which is better.

We are planning to do a 4 day weekend, but I'm not sure what day we will be arriving yet, maybe Friday thru Monday

Post by: mtn_bikers on November 15, 2010, 06:57:19 AM
I'm not sure which one is better, we've only stayed in the Meadows and Ridge camp loops. Maybe Bill or Bev would know the answer to this one, but let's make a decision as to either Point or Senoia soon so that we can all get reservations Dec 17 !

We stayed at Point, site 152.  The site and ones around it were awesome, but showers/restroom were at the top of a very steep hill, and the loop itself is on a sort of hill side.  We never stayed at Sonia, but to me it looks like there are many more water sites and more then one shower place.  I know absolutly nothing about Sonia loop though.

Post by: mtn_bikers on November 16, 2010, 07:03:00 AM
Bill - how close is this one to you? any chance of taking a ride before Dec 17 to check it out and make a decision as to which loop is better? If not, then I'm thinking Senoia because of the 2 bathrooms and more electric sites.

It is about 2 1/2 hours away from me Dawn.  I will try to get out there, but with taking off last weekend and the way my schedual runs I can't promise anything.  It gives me a month to try to fit it in, so its not like it is not do-able.

Bill - thanks for offering, I thought it was a little closer for you - don't worry about it. That is a to far to go to simply checkout a campground (in my opinion).  I'll try and get to Google maps and try to research it that way.

I was just about to offer a road trip since I typically don't need much of an excuse for a road trip, but I just saw that for me its a 4 hour ride. So I guess a road trip to scope out is a bit out of the question..... but a 4 hour trip for camping is another matter..

We scheduled this after the kids are out of school so we can make it at least a 4 day weekend.

Our 2 DD's are going to Europe at the end of June for 10 days. Not sure of the exact dates yet.
The DW and I would like to to go to this one if the timing is right. We rented a cabin on the lake about 5 yrs ago.
It's a beautiful lake.

Right now, we are scheduled for 11 days at Army Corps of Engineers West Thompson Lake CG in May.
Rally week at Chewonki CG in ME in July and Jan's every summer 10 days in August at Fishermans CG in RI.
I just don't have that much vacation time like DW does and any CG's that she'd spend a week at need to be nearby.
Plus that is in the middle of the Cape Ann, Ma Rally and the Salisbury Beach rally, both of which we're planning to attend.
Just can't do a 6 1/2 ride each way between two other rallies. Half that distance and we'd be there. Wish we could go, it looks great.

I am thinking I may be able to get up early Sat. and make the trip up to check for myself.  Here is a review from someone that knows the area from another site.

I perfer the point over senoia. Camp 126A is the best.
Senoia Pro's and Con's
Cleaner
Better Bathrooms
and if your not looking for water the top is great for more privacy

Smaller sites
more traffic
sites not flat

Point Pro's and Con's
Larger sites
Flat sites
easier to park

Small dated bathrooms
Most water sites are reserve only

In doing a little research, I have come up with another option that would probably be a lot easier to make happen.  Instead of Seven Points, there is a private place.  Lake Raystown Resort.  Sites are a bit more expensive, but also extremly nice!  We could get the waterfront sites which include water and electric, cable tv and wireless internet.  The resort also has some shops and a large paddle boat ride, as well as boat rentals.  Being private, maybe Joe could work his magic and get better rates also?  Take a look and see if we want to consider it?

we're open to whatever the majority wants. Whichever place we stay, we'd have to drive to the trail head for biking - unless we stated at Susquannock, which has no bathrooms, no flush toilets...not an option IMHO  ;)

Hello Everyone, I have the details for the rally updated at the beginning of the thread. PLEASE DON'T BOOK NOW!  I will have the contract finalized in 3 weeks and let everyone know when we can start booking sites.  We have the 21 sites blocked in the Birch Loop at this time.  If you go to their website, there is a virtual tour video that you can see what the CG looks like, we are the Birch wooded sites, not the grass field sites.  :)

Hi everyone !!  You probably recognize me from the place 'where campers connect'.  Hey, I may have some interest in this rally/group camp, if you'll have me.  I'm not nearly as outspoken in person as I am on a forum !!  Huh, bixll?

I am correct that this camping area is NOT within the Army Corps campground, right?  My cousin and his wife camp in the ACOE campground in the Senioa loop and always tell me how great it is.

I'll be checking back often for updates on this.  Also...... I'll just ask because I can't check.... too many tabs open already..... are these sites water/sewer/electric or what?

Yeah you are a bit quiet in person, I did not realize who you were at the rally till someone told me!  This is the resort, not corps campground, we could not get a block of sites at the corps.  The sites all have water and electric, and there are both water sites and wooded sites in our block.  Of course you are welcome to join us, anybody from any site is not only welcome, but encouraged to join us.......the more the merrier!!!!!

On a side note, I plan on getting a water site, but anyone who gets a wooded site is more then welcome to use my site for water access, or to pull boat/kayak up and tie off.

We just joined this site and are interested in attending.  Wondering if any of the nearby Pine Cabins will be available for those friends that want to attend but don't have a camper?  If this is not part of the package, we can call ourselves.  We have stayed there a couple of years in a row about 5 years ago in the Oak Cottages before we had a camper.  This is a very nice & very popular place.!

The cabins are very nice also.  I stayed in one with a pontoon boat club there.  If I remember correctly, the only thing you really need to bring is bedding and food.  I question how that all plays into the whole "Canvas Camper" theme though??

I have all the details worked out with the campground and the contract in place.  If each member would be reserving with them directly, they would require payment in full now so I will handle all the reservation requests and then I will send a reminder that payments need to be made between April 01 and April 14th for the campsites.

Please read the beginning of this thread for details, post your requested site/dates and then send me an email.  You will get a confirmation response from me.

Cabins must be reserved and paid for by January 01, 2011.  Please call the resort at  (814) 658-3500  ext 166 to book cabins.  There maybe cabins available after Jan 01 but they will only hold our block until then.

Hi everyone.

New to the website. Found out about CC doing a rally search on Pux.  We also have had friends camp here and love it. My family is interested in camping at Raystown as well.  It is about a  3 1/2 hr drive for us.  We would love to go.   If that is ok.

There is a group of us from W. Pa that meet a couple times a year and camp.  I would like to post it on PUX if it is not a problem with all of you.

Thanks
Andy

Newbie question here. I know the sites have 30/50 amp service according to their website. My little camper has a standard 110v hook up with the standard 3-prong plug. I don't know how many amps it can handle. Will it be OK at the camp ground or will I need to get an adapter? If so then what kind?
Thanks,

Tony

Tony, there are standard adapters that will take the 30AMP and break it out to 20/15 Amp. They look like this:

We sent one of our friends the information about this rally, although they fall into the shade-producing variety of canvas with a 31ft TT.  Hopefully they'll be one of the additional three.

It looks like we'll need to swap sites from 41 to 54 to accommodate the new Hybrid.  Site 41 says 24ft, but we're now 25' closed, and about another 4' longer with the rear bunk open.

Requesting site 41 (second choice, 42, third choice 30), from Friday June 17 through Monday June 20th (checking out Monday morning) - three nights, 4 days.

I see the sites said"24' Pop up" or something.  I have a 20' hybrid (expandable).  Do I need to pick a "TT" site, or are we good with these?

I'll send the e-mail requesting the same in a sec.

Thanks,

FYI. We were originally going to arrive on Thursday but we things have changed a bit and won't be able to show up on Friday. Just in case if anyone is wondering why our site is empty on Thursday. So hopefully the group meal thing is scheduled for Friday or Saturday.

Tony,
We will be doing a group campfire at the gathering site on Friday and dinner on Saturday.

FIREWOOD - Not sure where we are getting firewood yet since I haven't been there before.

BEER - There will be a 1/2 keg of Yuengling Lagar if those are interested.  We will be donating $15 per site and buying 2 or more if enough people are interested.  Please post if you are planning to be included.

DINNER - We will be bringing corn on the cob, butter, etc. and probably something else.

Just an FYI for the two members (not Tony) who have asked. 29 days or less 0% refund  Reservation changes should be made directly through the campground.  No need to cancel if arriving a day later.

Even with our Martini's, Peter and I are in for Yuengling. My son the Bartender is coming along, so we can put him to work  ;)

We will commit a "protein" for dinner as soon as the chef decided what....

I've a suggestion for the Saturday group dinner...

How about everyone bring their own meat/protein dish for themselves and a side dish to share?

Oh man I really butchered my last posting but I think everyone got the message that we will be arriving on Friday instead of Thursday.

As for bring food for the gathering we will most likely bring snacks like chips, pretzels, dips and such. This is because we'll be coming directly from Canada and it is forbidden to cross the border with any meat or plants (fruits and vegetables) and it will be impossible to bring everything from home before going up to Canada for the same border crossing reason and the food can't be kept cold enough for that long. Hopefully we'll find a supermarket along the way and be able to pick up our food supplies. Otherwise we'll be eating out a lot. LOL.

I think we'll skip on the beer thing. Michelle is not a drinker and she nursing our son so no booze for her. I'm not a big drinker at all so I'll just be sipping on my water and iced tea.

Not sure what we are bringing for the dinner yet and niether of us drink beer so we will be opting out of that.  We have also decided to bring just the kayaks this time instead of bringing 2 cars to be able to have the jetski along.

I'm taking mine online. $34.50
http://www.boat-ed.com/pennsylvania/index.html (http://www.boat-ed.com/pennsylvania/index.html)
When you pass, immediately print out a temporary certificate which will serve as your operating permit for 60 days.

I don't think there will be as many people on the water Friday and it's cheaper then the weekend.

I rented one of those in Florida with nothing more than a credit card and a driver's license. But that was about 20 years ago so rules may have changed since then. Anyway, those things don't go very fast and is pretty easy to manuver. All you really need is some common sense keep the speed low and you should be fine.

I just checked with them, since I live in NJ, I have to take the NJ equilivent (I can't take a PA one with a Jersey address). The NJ one, though can be studied online, requires an in person sit down exam. Nothing close to the area within the time frame  :(

Just wondering if there is anyone else  interested in going to the Saturday night Live Cruise from 9:00 to 11:00PM.  I'd love to bring my dancing shoes and dance the night away.  Rusty will be there to hear the band. He's not a dancer.

I attended my cousins, husbands funeral today.  I am trying to convince her to come along on this trip to Raystown just to get her out of the house and away from the everyday norm that is tearing her up.  He went really fast, 6 or 8 weeks after thinking nothing was wrong except for fatigue and shortness of breath.  He went in for diagnoses and they found stage 4 colon cancer.  I really hope she comes along, I think the group we have would really be able to give her a escape from reality, even if just for a few days.

Bring your cousin along.  A weekend with the CanvasCamper gang can be very therapeutic. But then again, she may need rehab in the closest psych facility after spending a weekend with us.

Rusty and I are totally up for the Saturday night cruise. Any other interested campers?

Phil, Dawn, Andy and Us.

Excellent weekend at Raystown, heavy rain Thursday evening and beautiful weather the remainder.  We had about 54-56 people for the Saturday night dinner, music game and campfire. (it was hard to count the kids running around since they were all in purple shirts)  Great to meet new friends and see old ones.  Now for my thank you:
Pete and Phil, purple potluck dinner was awesome  :chef:
Larry and Steve, the campfire guitar playing and singing along was a blast  :guitar:
Dawn and Joe, for helping coordinate and your support  :hardhat:
Mike, thanks for loaning your truck speakers so my music game didn't backfire.
Dave, for picking up beer and firewood  :smore:
Everyone, the abundant food, the tables and everything else that made it a great time.

I will post pictures soon.

I hope you enjoyed the 70s music game and the weekend!

Another great weekend camping.  We should have taken two more days of relaxing on the lake.  The kayaking was fun, Cora loved the water park, tons of great food and company.  We knew it would be a good weekend when Cora informed me that we could leave early and set up in the daylight!  We're looking forward to the next chance we get to get out with everyone.
