Our family is headed for Codorus State Park for Labor Day Weekend 2015.  We are on sites 72, 73, and 74 on B loop. Many electric sites are still left in the campground.  The pool will still be open that weekend too.

Just had a schedule change and now have the weekend free.  The to-do list can wait, we are going camping.  Since Killens Pond, DE  is all booked up, we are going to Allentown KOA.  Nice campground.  Big creek running thru the middle of it, Arcade, pool, mini golf.  Maybe we will see some of you there?

Can anyone give advice on things to do in the area?

50 minutes(30miles) from Knoebels.  Shady Brook CG, Beavertown PA was nice.  There are a lot of seasonal sites. But they had a fair amount of overnite sites as well.  The seasonal campers are friendly and welcoming.  The owner is there all the time and was Very Helpful.  He bought campground 5-6 yrs ago and has made improvements every year.  The bathhouse is brand new.  The new picnic tables are being built by the local high school. He is leveling and putting new stone on all the overnight sites.  The driveway is being improved for drainage .  The electric and water hook ups have been completely replaced and can accommodate 50, 30, and 20 amps.  There is LOTS of water pressure- be sure to bring your pressure regulator, you will need it.  Lots of trees.

The owner, Dave, is also the regional director for the  PA Campground Association.  The pool was clean and refreshing , it has nice steps to get in and out on. There are activities and things to do every Saturday. The owner is working hard to make this a real nice place.  The previous owner hadn't done much in a lot of years.  Most of the seasonal sites are newer campers.  All are well kept an clean.  Empty non leased, seasonal sites will be available to overnight guests as well.   The campground is 15 min from Selingsgrove, PA.  Dave went out of his way to accommodate our family of three campers on a holiday weekend with a two weeks notice.  We would return here. www.shadybrookcg.com

We are headed to RB Winter State Park in PA for Memorial Day weekend 2015.  I know some people do not like to camp on holidays, but it's nice to get out and we take advantage of our long weekends when we can.  http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/findapark/raymondbwinter/index.htm  Have heard lots of good things about this park from others.  There are some sites with electric and some not.  There is Hiking, Biking, Fishing, and Swimming.  The state park has a spring fed lake and a stream running down one side of the campground (though not sure if stream is accessible.    Penns Cave is 45min away,http://www.pennscave.com/  There are local wineries.  Clyde Peelings Reptile land is 30 min away.http://reptiland.com/  And a host of other things http://www.visitcentralpa.org/page.asp?tid=75&name=Attractions&cIds=107

So far 4 of us have reservations there for the weekend,

anyone else care to join us?

Thought we could do Knoebel's one day too, if we don't get there before that ( and I never know with my schedule).  We thought about just reserving at Knoebel's, but they don't start reservations till mid Feb and there is no guarantee there will be any open spaces, so we reserved at the state park, so we'd have a guaranteed reservation somewhere for sure.

We are headed to Cowan's Gap State Park in August, with some friends.  Fri 8/9 till Sun 8/11. Maybe we'll see some of you there?  We'll be on site 77.

http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/findapark/cowansgap/index.htm

Located between Chambersburg and McConnelsburg.

Swimming, Boating, Fishing, Hiking.  Most sites are partly shady.  Lots iof sites with electric 30 an/or 50 amp, some with electric and pet friendly.  We visited in the fall and it was a beautiful spot tucked in the gap between two mountain ridges.  Bath houses are new or newly remodeled.  All sites are gravel pads.  The campground is on a side hill so, some sites are not as level as others, but their web site does a good job of giving the dimensions and pitch.  There are lots of cabins of several sizes avail too.

Campgrounds, State Parks, Etc / PA-Promised Land State Park

Located in the Pocono Region of North Eastern PA, 5 miles south of route 84 on route 390.
100 Lower Lake Rd, Greentown, PA 18426

My Review:
Pickerel Point Camping Area has been totally renovated.  All sites have new pea size gravel, and are fairly level. Any site would be a good one.  Tent sites are cleared and nice tent pad installed.  All have beautiful picnic tables, fire rings with grates for cooking and lantern posts.  The roads are newly paved.  There are 2 brand new full bath houses with good hot water and good pressure too and both have coin-op laundry facilities too.  There is an additional restroom area on the end by the beach area.  Some of the sites are even full hook-ups-electric, water and sewer!

Due to last years storms, there are fallen trees in all camping areas, which have been cleared from camping sites, but left lay for you to use as free firewood, you just have to split it.  The east side of the point has more lake view sites due to the trees being less pine than the west side of the point.  This loop has pet friendly sites as well.

There is a resident eagle, kayakers tell of having been swooped by the eagle when on the lakes.  (It wasn't me, so I can't tell you anything more.  The cabins on pickerel point are also brand new and close to the bath house.

Beechwood area camping loop has paved pads and grass in between.  Sites are wide enough to park camper and TV side by side.  Sites are closer together in this loop.  SOme have electric.  The pull through sites would be my preference, and sites along the outside along the west side.

Northwoods area:  I think this loop may have been originally designed for tenters.  Could do campers/pups on pull throughs and they have electric.  Other preferred sites are:  431, 436, 443, 445, 455, 456, 457.

Rhododendron Area:  Preferred sites:  534 & 536 are sunny, 533 & 535 have afternoon shade.  539,541,542,543,544**personal fav, 550.  These have electric.

Trout fishing was said to be fabulous around the dam area using fly rod or spinner bait on opening trout weekend.  If wearing polarized glasses, lots of fish could be seen.

KOA is hosting their Camp Cares benefit May 10-12.  Buy Friday night and get Saturday night free.  We are definitely going, just need to pick a CG and make a call!

There are lots of fun activities to raise money for the KOA Camp Cares program, which sponsors kids with cancer for summer camp.  Follow the link above for more information.

We went last year to the Allentown KOA and were treated to a carnival with kids games and prizes on Saturday, Hay rides, and a Rubber Ducky Regatta on the creek with prizes for the winners, and ice cream truck.  The free second night allows you to spend that money on the carnival, hay ride and buying ducky's.  We had a great time.  The campground was full, but the staff and fellow campers were absolutely great!

Pre & Post Trip Ideas & Report / Memorial Day at Elk Neck State Park, Md
« on: November 21, 2012, 07:30:05 PM »
Thingette 1, Our parents and ourselves are headed to Elk Neck SP in Maryland for the holiday weekend.  It'll be our 1st trip there.  We have sites 237, 240, 242 on the Chester Loop, which is an electric loop. This park has the  Chesapeake Bay on one side, C&D Canal on the other. There is swimming on the bay side.  Hopefully, we'll see some of you there ::)

Info from their website:
Enjoy spectacular views of the Chesapeake Bay headwaters! Sandy beaches, marshlands and heavily wooded bluffs rising above the Northeast River. Camping, boating, and swimming are major activities. Several trails meander through the diverse landscape, revealing the great variety of plant and animal life. An easy walking trail to Turkey Point Lighthouse provides a view of the Elk River and the Chesapeake Bay. Family Fun for everyone!

36022 Bucks Rd, Dagsboro, DE 19939
(near Holts Landing SP)

http://www.jimshideawaycampground.com/

$45 a night if use AC, $40 a night if don't use AC.
$305 per week if use AC.

Most sites are sandy, pebbly.  Most sites are part shade, some are full shade.  Mature hardwoods.

There area a fairly large number of seasonal sites here.  B Road has no seasonal's at all.  Cedar St is a mixture.
Bathouse is good sized, 5 commodes, 8 showers, 6 sinks identical in mens and womens sides.  Water pressure is OK.

Pool is nice, looks like a new liner, children under 12 must be supervised at all times per DE law. Open daily 10 a - 8pm. It is closed every Weds.

Call for reservations and info, during off season, leave message and they'll call back.

You can tell that this CG was quite a hoppin place in years gone by, but with the economy and all, there are less people around.  THe buildings were freshly painted, and we were there in the off season, so I am unable to tell you what it might be like in the summer.

We were on site 52A. And would have considered sites near 16B, but it was dark when we got there, so we took first one we found that wasn't too far from restroom.

Cg is 10 min from Bethany Beach on Rte 26.  Large grocery store and Wegmans, is close by on Rte 26.

Check for Pics Under Resources in Photo Gallery.
