Hobbies & Activities / Reading WWII Airshow weekend - June 6-8, 2014
« on: April 22, 2014, 10:49:53 AM »
Joe and I have been going to the Reading WWII Airshow for a number of years now, and really enjoy it. We're planning on trying to get out there again this year.

Here is a link for more information if anyone is interested:

Usually we drive out and back on Saturday, which for us is about 5 hours in the car.  This year we thought we'd try going out Friday and camping over at either Sill's (Adamstown, PA) or Sun Valley RV Resort (Bowmansville, PA).  I was hoping to get some input on these two campgrounds. Anyone stay at either before? and what did you think?

What's Cookin / Vulcano Portable Grill
« on: January 31, 2013, 11:57:26 AM »
I was searching for a new grill for the upcoming camping season and stubled upon the Vulcano Grill.

This thing looks pretty interesting in that you have the flexibility to use 3 types of fuel (wood, charcoal or propane). I did find a review on the item, anyone in the group see or use one of these?

Pre & Post Trip Ideas & Report / Trip to Georgia - need advice
« on: January 24, 2013, 07:15:28 AM »
I'm in the planning stages of a trip post-Labor Day weekend that includes staying in Northern Georgia near Dahlonega.  We've never been to this area, so any advice on campgrounds would be most appreciated.

Our primary purpose for visiting this area is to mountain bike at Bull Mountain, Georgia Pinhoti Trail (Dalton) and Chicopee Woods (Gainesville).  So I'm trying to find a campground that is centrally located to the three locations.  I think I have two that may work, and would appreciate it if someone who's stayed there can provide some information.  The two campgrounds I've found in the area we want to visit are:
1. R-Ranch in the Mountains
2. Amicalola Falls State Park and Lodge

Any from the group ever stay in either of these?

Canvas Classified / BAL Leveler for sale
« on: January 14, 2013, 07:27:11 AM »
We're selling our BAL leveler. It is in "almost" new condition, asking $45. We'll be bringing it to the French Creek Spring Opener, pm me if interested.

We are heading out to Salida for a few days in late August. I've been doing some research on-line of places to stay for 2 nights. We'd like a place with electric at a minimum - anyone have any recommendations?

I found Four Seasons RV Park online - looking for some first hand knowledge of the place, or a suggestion on a better local cg

thanks in advance

Mods / Sewer Hose Storage Modification - Jayco X17Z Hybrid
« on: June 17, 2012, 07:58:26 PM »
We just purchased a 2012 Jayco X17Z hybrid, which we are really enjoying. One thing that we noticed was that unlike previous TT I've owned, there was no square bumper for storage of the sewer hose and connector. Jayco provides a small 4" diameter x 3' long PVC storage compartment on the road side of the camper. This compartment has many limitations, including the max length of hose that can be stored (10') and the type & number of couplers that can be used.  We have the new Rhino sewer hose system, and the hose with the couplers simply doesn't fit. So I did a little searching, and came up with Joe's very first "honey do" item of the new camper  ;).

Items needed for modification: 4.75" square PVC, Levolor curtain rod mounts, #8 & #10 screws, flat washers, lock washers, 2 PVC endcaps, and PVC gutter. Everything was purchased at Lowes.

Below are the pictures of the modification:

New "bumper storage" - notice no tie straps or u-bolts were used to secure the item. We used a 5 1/2" long through bolt to secure the endcaps (wing nut, washers, & lock washers)

The two Levelour curtain brackets were used to provide a second mounting point on both ends of the storage.

The brackets were disassembled and the L-bracket portion was secured to the bumper support on the camper

Here's a picture of the fence post with some of the bolts securing it to the camper bumper:

Next, two pieces of PVC gutter were cut in 3' and 4' sections. A small bungee cord was secured to one end.

This piece of gutter becomes not only a drawer for removing the sewer hose, but also the hose support when you are at a "full hookup" site

Total cost of the project was about $20, total time: approximately 1.5 hrs
I think Joe did a fantastic job - looks like it was meant to be there  :)

Towing / Tow Vehicle Research
« on: April 24, 2012, 12:53:51 PM »
I'm starting to think about a new tow 2 or 3 years I should be ready to pull the trigger. So I got to wondering, how does everyone start the process? In the past I've been set on the type/size/weight of the camper I'd be towing so the vehicle choice had a minimum requirement. Then I tried to get the highest gas mileage rating that I could.

Next go-around, we're looking at upgrading the camper and the tow vehicle. So I don't know if it is better to start with the camper we like or the tow vehicle and let the tow limitations dictate what we could look for in a new camper  :-\

What does everyone else do?

Towing / Trailer Weight Calculator
« on: March 25, 2012, 08:31:17 AM »
I found this great Trailer Weight Calculator online. It looks like it really simplies the calculations, and would be a fantastic tool for anyone looking to either upgrade their camper or change the tow vehicle.

Pre & Post Trip Ideas & Report / Moab, Utah Camping Suggestions Needed
« on: February 29, 2012, 12:28:40 PM »
I'm in the middle of planning out next big trip "out west" and could use some help with campground suggestions for the Moab area.

Has anyone stayed any of these places that I'm considering?
Moab Valley Resort
Canyonlands Campground
Arch View Resort

All range from $35-45/night, and are pretty close to town (also a must).  We are traveling with friends that are looking for cabin rental at the same campground where we go, so all of the above offer nightly cabin rentals.

Would appreciate if anyone out there has stayed at one of the places and can offer input pros/cons.

Off Topic / Mother Nature really dishing out to east coast this year
« on: October 31, 2011, 01:03:31 PM »
Once again, an "unexpected" storm has played havic on the East Coast. 16 inches of snow, and lots of downed trees and limbs. We've been without power since early (1 am) Sunday morning. Making this the 3rd time in 2 months we are without power for multiple days up in northern NJ's Sussex County. Best estimate is they hope to have 95% restored by Thursday evening  :banghead:

Figures...we just went to the butcher and restocked the freezer after the last time when we lost most of the contents of the freezer and fridge. This is getting expensive !

How did everyone else make out? I hear CT got hit just as bad as NJ.

Off Topic / 9/11 Anniversary
« on: September 07, 2011, 07:06:46 AM »
I can't believe it is 10 years since 9/11.  I'm sure most of you, like me, remember exactly what they were doing when they found out that the United States was under attack by terrorist. I have two family members that at the time used the Trade Center subway station on their way to work, I remember the panic of not being able to find them, and hoping they weren't somehow caught up in the mess. It wasn't until the next day that we were able to make contact with them and confirm that they were ok.  Thankfully, both my brother and cousin were away from the area when the planes hit, so they were unhurt physically. Both witnessed the horror from their office windows, something that neither of them discusses to this day.

That event 10 years ago is what motivated me to leave private industry and seek a job working for the US Army - I wanted to do something to help the men and women that protect us everyday.

May God Bless the families of those that perished on that horrible day.

I was recently in a great little yarn shop in Intercouse, PA (Lancaster Yarn Shop). The woman who was working there told me about a fantastic website for free knitting and crochet patterns call

I highly recommend this site for any of you yarn workers out there - you can even select the amount of yarn that you have and it will give you a listing of projects that you could do with it. What a great way of using up yarn from other projects without making a granny square afgan  ;D

Off Topic / Its 5:15 pm and its still light out...
« on: February 07, 2011, 07:15:20 AM »
I noticed yesterday that I could really tell that the days are getting longer  8). We actually had a nice "warm", i.e. above 30F day for the first time in a long time.

Come on Spring !  ;D

Off Topic / Snow, Snow go away...come again some other day....
« on: February 03, 2011, 06:47:30 AM »
Just finished shoveling out from the latest that mother nature had to dish out to the Garden State. 1/2" of ice on top of 6 inches of snow. Oh my aching back.

It is actually getting tough to see the camper with all the snow piled around it once we cleared the roof. The snow comes right up to the awning bag and the front fork is completely covered.

More good news - another winter "event", i.e. snow/sleet/freezing rain, is on the way for Saturday into Sunday...and the weather man has another one on the long range for next Tuesday...this has got to be the longest winter in a long, long time.

Thank God the groundhog DIDN"T see his shadow - I don't think I can handle another 6 weeks of winter!

We can't wait for the warm weather and camping season. Who else out there is suffering from cabin fever? and missing camping??
