Back awning - MOD
« on: January 24, 2011, 11:48:32 PM »
The zipper and bag on my awning had been failing so I bought a new one from my local dealer.  I used the old awning material to make a back awning for the camper.  This mod allows us to leave the back window open during the day and enjoy a breeze through the camper.  It blocks the sun from beating down and also protects the inside of the camper from rain.  I had this up one evening this past season through a 6 hour thunder storm and it worked great.

This mod was an idea I got from my friends up in NY. Thanks Steve and Nicki.
I cut and glued PVC together with small bungee cords around the lift poles to hold it to the camper.
I added eye hooks on the outside with a longer bungee to add tention across the awning.
I installed Velcro up under the roof and sewed Velcro to an extended piece of awning that we tuck up under the roof.  This will stop any water or wind from going behind the awning.

Nice job Joe, do you leaving the awning attached at the velcro and just tuck it in with the tenting?

Hey Joe thanks for the props! Our back awning mod also held up in an insane all night rain storms. The humidity was crazy that night and the temp didn't really drop add that to having 6 people in the PUP that night it was awesome to have the back window open and get a cross breeze.
We went poor man route and just used a piece of old tarp we had that had a few tears but there was a large enough section that was good to use.

I really must do this. I am thinking after I take care of the roof issues, this will be the next mod.

Thanks for posting it up Joe!

My sister is working on this mod now. Awning that she got from Harbolds yard sale is enough to make at least 2 of these.  Question? Where do I get c-channel as one of the edges has the plastic ribbing that slides in it? Might just install it like a regular awning.

I'm not 100% sure I understand the question so if my answer makes no sense, I haven't been drinking.

I took a piece of awning and sewed it back on itself at both ends to make pockets for the PVC to slide into.  The PVC has a threaded fixing that I screw together during installed and can take apart for easier storage.  I use small bungees at the top and bottom just to hold it in place and the long bungee cords on the ends are for tension across the length.

I hope that answered your question?

I understand your directions. I am concerned that my uprights won't like the tension and I know that the bottom of the sides can't have screws put in and hold anything (yes, I know, I should fix the roof). I was curious if the long edge of the awning nearest the camper can be fixed to the camper like a regular awning. If so, I need c-channel.

I made my awning about 16" deep (i think?) and then cut the upper pieces of PVC without gluing anything.  I added the 90 on the end and cut the pieces for the lower section.  There is not tension on the roof or lift system, I needed to small bungee to hold it in place.

The long bungees are just hooked to the camper and the tension is only on the outside edge of the awning.

Google awning rail and you'll find plenty of sources. If you have a local RV dealer you might be able to get it there and save shipping.
