Ford Radio with tape stuck in it.
« on: March 12, 2012, 09:43:45 PM »
I have a 1994 Ford van with....gasp....a tape deck.  The tape will not eject now.  I would be fine with constantly listening to Johny Cash's greatest hits or something but this is one of those tapes with wires my bro put in when he borrowed the van so he could use his MP3 player or something.  I do not know where my Ipod is so I have no tunes.  It is my extra vehicle that I use as a TV so I don't drive it often.  But when I do drive it....what a boring drive.

It has been 15 years since I pulled apart a dash and changed out a radio.  I don't look forward to that.  So, anyone know of any special sequences of pushing buttons that will get this tape out?  Any way I can pry the tape out without damaging the radio and or the tape?

If you figure it out let us know. I have a 2003 Dodge with one stuck in it. I cut the wires and the radio works but no more tape

There still car running around with tap deck in them man to get the tape out you would need to take the Radio out and remove the top cover than you can get the tape out.

You should be able to slide a small flat-bladed screwdriver under the cassette and then grab it with needlenose pliers. Wiggle the pliers to disengage it from the drive mechanism and pull it out.

I wish I could just cut the wires and live without a tapedeck.  I have tried with the screwdriver but it has the head extended into the cassette to read the tape.  I guess I need to try wiggling it a bit more.  I don't want to damage the tape 'cause if I find my iPod I can plug it in and if I mess it up to the point that both the radio and the tapedeck, then I will need a new radio......and I'm back to not wanting to pull apart the dash.

Remember when you could get to a radio by unscrewing a few screws and whala....total access to the radio?  :hardhat:  The last vehicle I changed a radio on was a 198? Oldsmobile, it was my buddies.  I don't see how to pull the dash apart.  It must be all clips and stuff where I can't see and if I break a clip I will be SOL.

"Double L"

I've tackled some car stereos in the past and I'd have to say they weren't that bad. DW's Outback was the last one I did. It seems to me that the newer cars have gotten so the dash can come apart fairly easily by simply pulling a few screws and finessing the trim out to expose mounting hardware for the stereo. If it's something you are trying to do yourself maybe cruthfeild would be a resource to to check out. Or check out Best buy and let them do it for 100 bucks plus install it might make those trips money well spent

I found this with a quick search

I guess the big thing is that I am not comfortable because I haven't done it in a long time and that was on an 80 something car with the 2 posts.  Plus I am pissed that my bro didn't take care of this.

We had this happen before.  And used a butter knife to slide in under the tape and lift it up and wiggle it around while pushing the eject button and it came out.  Good Luck.

Try putting the screwdriver under the tape and use a dentist tool with a hook on it and stick it in the reel hole and pull on it

If Bad Seed's suggestion works, it'll have to be added to the MacGuyver page!!

I suggest wrapping a box in gift paper and laying out the tools on the hood of the truck.  Put up a sign 'Whoever gets the tape out wins this prize"  lol.  That'll give the teens something to do this weekend  ;D
