Group Rally Meal Options
« on: November 30, 2010, 08:19:38 AM »
I'd like to change up the potluck meals we've been doing for our group trips and need you ideas and suggestions.  Please post ideas and descriptions?

True Potluck: Everyone bringing something to eat, no one knows what's coming. Like our friends at MAC would say, "If everyone brings potato salad, then we eat potato salad"

Roaming Around (Float Around - there is a name for this, but I don't know it): move from site to site for each course of the meal.
  • drinks
  • soup or salad
  • entree
  • desert
  • drinks and campfire

Planned Meal: (Thanksgiving Rally) One or two family makes the main course, everyone else brings a themed side and throws in a few bucks for the main.

Soup and Chili Meal:  Nothing but everyones soup, chili and breads.

Snacks and Drinks:Maybe over a long weekend, we could do afternoon snacks and drinks at different sites each day. (insert red cup here)

Others?

I vote for the snacks and drinks option.

Sometimes I don't really want to do a pot luck dinner.  Don't get me wrong, I love pot luck dinners, (and the breakfasts at church MMmmmm) but sometimes when I camp I want to cook dinner for just my family.  Typically I don't get to the campground until after dinner on Friday leaving me only Saturday to cook a dinner.  A pot luck here and there and maybe an organized dinner like the pig roast at Gettysburg last year or the Thanksgiving Rally would be good.

For the Mid Winter Rally I am organizing at French Creek I am going to have a campfire and either ask everyone to bring cookies or do a funny :D gift exchange to get everyone together on Saturday night.

I personally think that we can use different approaches for gathering campers together, based upon the time of year and activities available at the campsite and outside of the campsite. The Thanksgiving rally with all the trimmings is a great theme for November. Chili, soups and bread could be a good theme for October. A rally during the warmer months when there is alot of activities available at the campsite and outlying area, may be a good time to just have snacks and drinks one night.

Peter and I have had some great times organizing "Roaming" dinners at campgrounds. Generally you have "teams" for each station so one person doesn't have to do all the work or expense, plus it lets them get "creative" with how to display the product.

Team 1: Cocktails/Opening Drinks and welcome
Team 2: Appetizers
Team 3: Entree
Team 4: Sides/Salads
TEam 5: Communal eating place (Tables/chairs/decorations)
Team 6: Dessert

The goals is you all meet at Team 1, have an opening drink. Then you walk, to Team 2 - have an appetiszer - finish it there, then walk to team 3 for the entree and team 4 for sides and head to team 5 to all eat together. Team 6 is dessert.

Doing it this way the cost is pretty minimal.

Pete and Phil's roaming dinner idea sounds great. What I understand, you two certainly have the expertise on creating/coordinating wonderful dinners.

Lone Lock,
I understand what you mean.  Since everyone arrives at different times on Fridays, we normally have a 'meet and great' campfire.  People can stop by if they are interested.

We don't plan anything usually Saturday during the day and have a dinner and campfire Saturday evening... again, optional.  If you ever want to have dinner with your family, no worries, just stop by the fire and stay hi later.  Many people also come for dinner and return to their campsite after for the evening.  It's always nice to make it available, many enjoy the social aspect.

The big thing is that we want to make the option to mingle available but not required.

I was thinking about this the past couple of days.  I've come to a conclusion that a communal burger meal would probably work quite well at SPs and other locations with grills or fire pits.
A central fixings bar could be set up with condiments and toppings with burgers grill to order.
Obviously hotdogs would also work well in this situation.

Steve,
I like the central fixin bar:
  • Cheddar cheese
  • American cheese
  • Pepper Jack cheese
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Onion
  • Bacon
  • Ketchup
  • Mustard
  • Mayo
  • Relish
  • BBQ sauce
  • A1 sauce
  • Sautéed mushrooms
What am I missing?

Steve - I love love love the fixin bar idea.  So great and so much fun.  LEt's face it when it comes to a burger we all like it the way we like it.  I like mine with lettuce, tomato, mayo, ketchup and mustard and of course CHEESE!!  Actually can we add blue cheese crumbles to our fixin bar??  That'll complete it!!

On one of our trips last year we did a cheesesteak bar. We had a griller that just grilled the meat, onions, mushrooms and peppers - all put out on a fixins bar. They were so good......

OMG. I just had lunch but my mouth is watering and getting hungry again. Are we doing to do this at Lake Raystown with people showing up on different days?

Tony,
We will be having at least one group meal at Raystown, most likely Saturday late afternoon.  It would be a great place for the fixin bar.  :P

Hamburgers and hot dogs with a fixin bar sounds simply and elegant to me.    Would someone  please explain what SPs are. :dunno:
