First thing I would tell someone interested in Geocaching would be to sign up for a free account at Geocaching.com. Lots of information on how to play the game.
I wouldn't go out and get a GPSr right away. Use the apps for the iPhones/iPads or Androids. Geocaching by Groundspeak is about $10 and I think worth the money.
Be sure to check out the GPSr's on the Geocaching site and they do have a nice review on how to buy your first GPSr.
I downloaded the free ap on my iphone and it works fine for most. Start there and see how it goes. Nathan and I have found some in local parks. just pull out the phone, check what is near and go find it.

If all goes as planned ill be finding my 100th cache this weekend, and I've found probably 80% or more of them using the Geocaching.com app on my phone.
I suggest reading up on geocaching on geocaching.com and bing aware of some geocaching etiquette before going out there.
I was very lucky to be escorted by Ladyhawke and (her) DH for my first geocaching adventure. If you can go with someone who can show you the ropes, it would probably be helpful. I'm sure there will be several people at the next rally who would like to geocaching with you!
