Personal opinions and general observations:

Pros:

Better stability at highway speeds

A flat tire is not as dangerous as you still have other tires in use

More safety since you have brakes on 4 wheels instead of 2

Less prone to sway

You track straighter in a side wind and less likely to bounce

Can handle a heavier payload

Generally tandem axles are farther back on the trailer, so backing up is much easier.

Cons:

Trailer will cost more

Trailer will weigh more

Fuel consumption will be higher due to more weight

Higher maintenance costs as you have 4 wheels to maintain

Much more important to tow level so tires wear evenly

Hello folks, ok, I like to do my homework prior to making a "big" purchase (this is big for me lol) I have been reading thru the forums looking at ideas and whatnot, but I think I am getting ahead of myself. so I thought I would come here and ask you your thoughts.
I will be using the tent trailer or pop up by myself for the most part, for one week during the summer and then some occasion weekend jaunts with the wife. I would like to have a stove, fridge and ac. having said that I could just go out and purchase a stand alone ac unit that vents outside, but if the pup has one that's money saved. I would like a place where a couple of friends could come in and hang out play cards that sort of thing if possible. A screenend in porch would be desirable. I'm not real crazy about having the toilet inside especially near bed or food, my thought is (and this is where the screen porch comes into play) is putting a privacy tent outside the pup with a portapottie (looking for suggestions and recommendations here as well). I will be housing this in my garage which has a 8x17 space. this will be my winter project should I need or want to do anything (been looking at mods, such as painting cupboards updating cushions and what not and laying down laminate flooring) as needed, but I don't want to go overboard into debt. Honestly I'm starting with 1300 currently and over the course of the next month or so will have around 2000 to put towards my new pup.
So with all that in mind I am asking your opinions, what are the good pups vs the bad pups. please feel free to throw as much info at me as you wish knowledge is key in making decisions
Thank You

Alright, that's what I was wondering. So even for some of the smaller ones they are under that 10% ratio (again that's published numbers). If it ended up being measured and those weights were accurate, would it be unsafe to tow it that way? I could see how one or a few manufacturers would list low tongue weight ratings in order to make it look more attainable for people's tow vehicles, but there is a large number of trailers among various manufactures that list tongue rating under 10% of the unloaded vehicle weight. Are manufacturers just expecting you to have accessories and or gear loaded in the trailer that increases the tongue weight and brings it closer to that ideal ratio?

Tongue weight is a function of loading and weight distribution within the unit. That being said the industry standard for ANYTHING tow-able says that in order to have adequate towing control of a unit that a minimum of 10% of the weight has to be on the tongue - so I think those numbers are very very suspect.

Since the range can be 10-15% most max weight calculations are based on 12.5%. This becomes really critical when you are getting close to the "payload" amount. The amount of weight you tow vehicle is with vehicle, passengers, fuel, baggage and tongue weight.

In my humble opinion, I think those numbers are marketing numbers only. I think you have to weight it or as a minimum have a dealer prove it. (They all have tongue weight scales.
