Anode Rod - In or out after draining tank

I was told by another camper, that after I drain my hot water tank, I need to put the Anode Rod Back in the tank to protect the threads that hold the Rod in the tank from rusting.  Is this true? I do use a small wire brush to clean the rust off of threads in the water tank.  Is there a way to stop them for rusting?  Should I put the rod back in after I drain the tank?  Any comments or opinions are welcome.  I have a 2009 Coleman Westlake.  There is no manual for the water tank.  Just a plate inside on how to light it.

Thanks,

Bruce

Brucea,
I'm not telling you that my answer is right but here is what I do.
I pull the anode rod over the winter and inspect it in the spring before the camping season.  I have hot and cold water valves below the water heater (under the camper) which open and drain when draining the water tank between trips.  Stale water isn't good, smells.  The water heater has worked well, the water has been fresh and the anode rod hasn't been an issue.

I do put Teflon tape on the threads of the anode rod when installing it in the spring.

Wow, deja vu or what ...    😉

As I posted elsewhere,  I drain my tank at the end of the season when I'm winterizing and put the plug (TT has an Atwood tank) back in too not only keep the threads from rusting but to also keep things from climbing in and making the wh tank home....

The last 2 trailers I've had plus the current one didn't have anode rods, but the 1999 Westlake did. I would remove the rod for the winter and replace it with a plastic plug available at any hardware/RV store.
