Has anyone ever camped at Assateague Island in Maryland?  How far in advance do you need to book?  What's the best time of the year.  What else do we need to know ahead of time?

There is the State Park and the Federal Park. The State Park (MD), has loops right along the beach and has Electric Hookups and Bath Houses. The Federal Park has no hookups. The State Park is very popular, but generally is sold out by Februrary for the entire year. If you are even thinking about it, check for reservations.

Be aware that Mosquitos and Flys are a big problem if it has rained or there is little breeze from the ocean. Bring LOTS of bug spray.

We ride our motorcycle every year through Assateague Island to see the water and horses while in Ocean City but have never camped there.  If there is a good time of the year, I'm interested in a group trip, anyone else?

We camp there at least once a year, State Park that is. We usually camp there in the fall, and "boon dock" so early reservations aren't needed.  One note, The State Park has only one loop with electric hook ups, they usually are booked a year in advance for the summer.

We camped here once pre-kids.  It is very nice.  My only complaint is the sand that gets in the camper but,  what do you expect when you camp at a beach.

I camp at Assateague Island National Seashore several times a year.  It is one of my favorite campgrounds.  I think the "best" time to camp there is in the fall.  The mosquitoes and green headed flies are gone or mostly gone.  You need to book well in advance for the summer season.  We do go there each summer.  If it is dry the bugs are not too bad.  If it is wet the bugs are awful.  I have pictures of the national park on my webshots albums.  I am going the end of June this summer.  The national park does not have any hookups, chemical toilets, and cold water showers.  The cold water showers feel good in the summer.  The water is slightly warmed from the water lines running through the sand.  Horses and sika (small asian elk)are all over the island and will come visit.  You are not allowed to touch any of the wildlife including the horses.  🙂

If you stay in the National Park campground, BAYSIDE looks tempting, but the flies and mosquitoes are vicious , quite bloodthirsty. Camp on the ocean side, despite the sand.

The horses (they ARE horses, though they are small, like ponies) roam freely. DO NOT leave any food at all in the open. The horses seem tame, but do not try their patience; they'll take only so much bothering, and then they WILL react. And, watch where you walk!

The beach has a nice, easy, gentle slope into the water.

There should be a wide variety of programs available. The rangers are quite knowledgeable.

Ocean City, with its magnificent boardwalk, is an easy drive north, if you want some "night life."

Reserve early, and be prepared for crowds.

Joe
I'm in for a group camping if there is one. Fall sounds like a great time.
