We took our very first pop-up on its maiden voyage to Asseteague Island in Md. and ripped one of the stabilizers off going through the gate. (D'OH!) Fortunately we were able to jury rig it for the weekend and it was an easy and inexpensive fix!
Great campground right on the beach, as I recall BUT, the wild ponies really do go everywhere and get into everything. They're very tame, but that year was a bad one for fleas and ticks. So if you don't like horses or ponies, like me, you might want to reconsider. We went on opening weekend so the park was pretty empty, but it was very clean.
Enjoy the beach! We are headed to New Jersey Beach this fall too. Love the beach in the fall.

We've been down twice to Assateague, both times staying at Chincoteague Island in private parks.
Chicoteague is at the southern end of Assateague Island. One of the huge benefits of staying on Chincoteague Island is that they spray for mosquitos every evening. It really helps keeping them down.
Tom's Cove CG where we stayed the last time when they were doing the pony penning is right near where they ponies are swum across the water.
You can watch from the docks in the CG and walk into town for the Auction/carnival.
The southern end of Assateague is much less busy than the northern end. There aren't many skeeters/flies on Assateague at that end due to the proximity of Chincoteague and their continual spraying.
Tom's cove is a typical shore are private CG, but in reality, most of our time was spent on the southern end of Assateague.
And you can see Wallops Island, the NASA facility in VA from the southern end of both Islands.
They sent up a rocket from there up to the space station recently.
The last time we went was over ten years ago, but I would travel back to Chincoteague on the next trip even though it's a couple of hours further south.
I really dislike being lathered up in Deet, which is what you have to do at the northern end.
Assateague NP is one of our favorite places to camp, but it certainly does have drawbacks.
Yes, there are plenty of mosquitoes, and then some.
Horses can be aggressive.
There aren't any hot showers, and the cold showers that do exist consist of a door and open roof in the middle of the camping loop.
No flush toilets either, all porta-potty type.
Extremely difficult (at least it seems so for us) to get a reservation.
Can get shut down for political reasons (this year's trip was cancelled due to government shutdown)..
That said, I love it.
There's nowhere else within a day's reasonable driving distance for us (we live in the Philly suburbs) that offers oceanfront camping (though in back of the dunes) while maintaining an atmosphere that has minimal human intervention. I know it sounds crazy (at least to those from my geographical area) to go to 'the shore' and not have a boardwalk, electricity, or running water (don't get me wrong, I do love 'the boardwalk', especially in OC NJ). It's a wonderful experience to be out on a beach at night without light pollution, plus fires are allowed provided they are beneath the high tide line.
It's not for everyone, but if you're looking to see what the shore is like without the development, this is definitely the place to go.
We been going to Assateague State Park Maryland over 25 years, I made our May 2013 album public to view.
It was an awesome year I let the pictures do the talking!
