If you are over 62, are disabled, a volunteer or are in the military, you can stay in government owned campgrounds and can save a lot of money with the Access Pass. It is FREE to anyone with a disability, military and their families. It's only $10 for a senior citizen lifetime pass.
All the federal campsites are 50% off and a lot of state campgrounds also honor the pass. It's worse taking a few minutes to read about it. Here's a link with more info: http://store.usgs.gov/pass/index.html
Yep, it's great! It's not just camping fees either, I get 50% on my Army Corps boat launch pass. This morning I booked 8 days at Rudd's Creek campground in Virginia, normal charge $192.00, my cost $96.00! $12.00 a day with water and electric, sweet! I'm surprised that the Army Corps and National Park campgrounds aren't used by many at Canvas Campers. Even the normal rate of $24.00 a day is cheap. I've been told Raytown Lake in PA has the highest use of any Army Corps campground. I think their rate is $30.00 a day. Still a bargain compared to state or private campgrounds.
