Any one camp here. How close is the beach? Anyone have the off road pass I had It last year don't know if I'll get it again. Also what's the alcohol situation I know it's a state park just never been to one in ny. Also are there better weekend than others. Can I put a pop-up with two tents on one site? Thanks for the help
Take a look at this web site offered by NY state parks they can answer all your questions. The camp site is 500 feet from the ocean there is a grass and sandy dune between site and the water you can see the picture on the web site of campers set up along the water I have walked through this site a few times on the beach used my metal detector in the sand, but never camped here. It is def on my list of must do since i live so close to Long island. I did look at the rules and regulations page alcohol is allowed in the park .
Alcoholic Beverages - While alcoholic beverages are allowed in most NYS campgrounds without a permit, it is the responsibility of each camping party to comply with all laws and regulations. Stony Brook State Park, Wildwood State Park and Beaver Pond Campground restrict the use of alcohol and require a permit.
Hither Hills State Park offers visitors scenic picnic areas and fireplaces, sport fishing, a two-mile sandy ocean beach, a 40-acre freshwater lake, playing fields, a playground and a 168-site campground on the ocean. Anglers can fish year-round and obtain permits to fish at night. The unique "walking dunes" of Napeague Harbor are located on the eastern boundary of the park, which also has woodlands filled with Russian olive, oak, shad and pine trees. Bridle paths and hiking, nature, biking and cross-country ski trails are available.

hope this helps, Jonathan
I'm from Long Island. I have camped there a few times during the off season. Trying to get in there in season is a real PIA the place books up really fast. Its only about a 200ft walk from the campground to the beach. The campground at Hither Hills is basically an extention of the parking lot. For out of state residents I believe the tab comes in at $56.00 a night.
Here's a pic of the campground from the NYS parks webpage.

Go for it - the only place I know of that has this type of beach access close to PA is Delaware Seashore State Park - it's like camping in a parking lot (though they have full hookups, close walk to inlet/marsh/beach, sites jammed together, folks might get a bit loud though everyone is always very friendly). No grassy sites like in the post's pic, and it books up quick.
Please let us know how you make out, we've always been curious about that CG!
We go to Delaware Seashore State Park (looking it up via google maps and using the street view would give a good perspective, right off of DE Route 1) and Delaware's Cape Henlopen State Park (campsites are a bit farther from the beach - you can still walk, but some folks might find it a long way to haul the beach gear). I'm lousy with estimating distances, sorry I can't give a good idea.
Del Seashore state park is between Rehobeth Beach and Bethany Beach, DE. It is also 30 min north of Ocean City Maryland. Dover Air Force Base and Raceway is 45 min North (on a good day, not in summer traffic tho). The istes are rather close together, but it is cheap, and very close to the beach. There aren't any trees, but there is always a breeze (can actually be quite a strong wind). The LI CG looks real nice with all that grass. They must've hauled in topsoil. Can't grow good grass on sand, which is what you'll find between the paved parking pads at Del Seashore.
Pete,
For direct beach front camping this is about the only game in town for out of state residents. There are a few county campgrounds that are 4x4 access only and your camping right on the beach but the county makes it almost impossible for non residents to get in their campgrounds. There also I'd Wildwood state park on the north shore but the beaches on the north shore tend to be very rocky in like the sandy south shore.

Unfortunately NYS does not offer any outer beach camping - I say this because Suffolk County loves to stick it to non residents (Non res 4x4 permit, county park access pass, and non res camping reservations would be required) See the 2nd Page of this PDF for beach camping locations.
