I'm looking for recommendations on a good water proof/water resistant camera. Picture quality isn't one of my pet peeves. Of course, I don't want a shoddy camera, but I couldn't care less about 481 Terrapixels. I'm looking for a tough, moderate to small camera that can be taken on a kayak or canoing trip or taken out in the rain (not necessarily submerged, just wet). AA batteries are almost a mandate. I would make a concession on that if everything else was impressive enough, but not likely as I often camp away from power and I can't stand picking up our Sony at home only to learn that the battery is dead. I always have to charge it and I HATE that. I'd much rather be able to change the batteries.
What do you have that you like or would recommend to me?

I like Amazon because of the actual owner opinions and ratings.
If I went on a Canoe trip or something and I wanted a waterproof camera I would buy a waterproof disposable 35mm camera. I haven't used one since my honeymoon 5 years ago.....do they still make them?
I never knew water proof cameras could be so inexpensive. I expected them to be $200-$300. I would spend $100, that's what I pay for a normal camera.

I wouldn't go the disposable route again. We decided last year to wait to buy an underwater/waterproof cameral and buy 3 disposable 35mm for our Florida Keys snorkel trip. Well, it cost A LOT of money to develop that film now. It would have been better to pay the extra money on a digital underwater camera. I forget what brand I liked best now....because I am saving for a GoPro Hero 3. Video and camera and totally waterproof. But I would check reviews and expect to pay around $150-$200 for a decent one.
Last Christmas I bought my wife a Olympus Stylus that comes with a flotation attachment and is "All Weather", we've even used it in a monsoon of sorts. Now realize my wife is used to her dive camera and the heavy housing in wet conditions but this is pretty durable. It looks like the standard camera that does pictures and video, not unlike her former Nikon that our DD's destroyed but much more durable. I think I paid about $150 on sale last year so if they still make it you should be able to find it for less than that now.
Good luck and if there's one piece of advice I can give you is compare, compare, compare.

Judy, I had Googled a number of times and every time, I'm swamped by the choices. That's why I came here to ask for recommendations. 😉
Lone Lock, I used to LOVE 35mm film, but as cheap as digital cameras are not, three rolls of developing and I could own one just as jmcclung said. I have a waterproof dive housing that accepts throw away cameras, but it's bulky and due to the cost of development, I doubt I'll ever use it again.
I hadn't really considered the GoPro before. I have a buddy in CA that has one; I'll have to hit him up for a specific review.
Back to AA batteries; do any of above recommendations use AA batteries?
I have an Olympus Tough TG-320 and it works great both on land and under the sea. I paid around $130.00 for it last June. Pictures and video underwater are clear and the sound underwater is quite good as well. They give you a bunch of picture and video special effects that all work quite well. Battery is a lithium one that holds a charge what seems like forever and it does recharge quite quickly.A friend bought one for their young son around the same time I bought mine and he has yet to destroy it For the little bit of money it costs I think its quite a buy. I think most of the review sites are garbage when it comes to cameras. People buy a $150.00 camera and think it should shoot pictures like a $1000.00 pro model. Also they print them out and the pictures are only as good as the settings they have the camera at and the quality of their printer/ink/paper. Buy this one I dont think you will be disappointed.
Bad Seed said the magic words...I was planning on buying the Olympus Tough TG-320. I think after all the reviews, it was best for my money (that I didn't end up spending. ;D) The only negative I didn't like about the Go Pro was the extra housing needed to take good pictures underwater. But, I thought that was about the only negative and I wouldn't be using it underwater that much anyway. More for kayaking, fishing, etc.
I used a Go Pro last Easter at a campground to record the "Adult Easter Egg Hunt". Man, that sold me after watching the video.
My daughter bought the Panasonic Lumix last summer for a little over $100 on sale. We took it tubing and it took great underwater pictures. It's nice and compact but doesn't use AA batteries. What I did with my camera (because I'm horrible at remembering to make sure the battery is charged) is I went online and bought another battery for next to nothing for a spare. I take a million pictures and never have a dead battery.
