We're going to be driving to CA from northeastern WA.  I'm weighing pros and cons about my vehicle against renting either a good sized tow equipped SUV or crew cab pick up.

Pro for renting:
Can get something more suited to 3 people riding,
Wear and tear won't be my problem,
Won't have to run out and buy new tires for my truck.

Cons:
Cost,
Wear and tear will be my problem,
I'll still need tires for my truck.

Has anybody else ever rented a TV?  Was it worth it to you?  Personal experiences, pros and cons are appreciated... even if you've not done so but have some ideas.

I read somewhere that most vehicle rental agreements say in the fine print that you can't tow with it......unless you rent a U-Haul.

How much will the rental be -vs- the cost of new tires?

Not sure a rented vehicle would have trailer wiring connection & brake control either?

Good point about the brake controller.  I do know some stock pick ups come equipped.

When I moved to WA from NC I had asked Penske about towing my trailer behind their truck.  "Only our equipment is allowed to be towed."

I've got to get ahold of an actual person to talk to.  Online's only good for so many things.

And while you're at it... check on the inclusion of mileage. The last time we rented (not for towing) there was a certain number of miles included in the daily rate. After that you paid some crazy amount per mile.

Hertz said "No towing".

I never rent unless it's unlimited mileage.  You can get taken big time by excess mileage fees.

I'm going to check with a local mom & pops outfit.  They'd be more likely to have a little leeway.

i tried to find a rental truck or SUV to tow our new Roo.
it was in Chicago and i wanted to fly there, rent something to tow it back to California.
after 3 months of research, i gave up. never found any company willing to rent anything to tow a travel trailer any distance other than around town.
that was back in '06 but i doubt you'll find anyone willing to risk it.

Better off finding a Friend to swap vehicles with.

No regular car/truck rental place will allow towing. And U-haul (and such) van/truck is normally only allowed for THERE OWN trailers only.

LOOK into a RV rental place - they allow towing behind there RVs (normally for a boat/utility etc).  They may have a truck to rent (for moving 5th-wheels)!

If you rent from a local rental agency as opposed to a national chain, you will also get hit pretty heavy on returning the vehicle. National chains usually only charge a flat $100 for return for a one way trip.

You would be better off putting new tires on your truck and servicing it for the trip. any car rental co finds out you were pulling a camper and the car/truck was damaged you well have to pay for the repairs.

It's funny I read this thread last week and over the weekend I had a buddy driving to Saskatchewan to go bear hunting with friends.  They were driving to Montana before heading North into Canada.  They left Pittsburgh Friday night and on Saturday their TV got problems in Indiana.  They are pulling some sort of camper.  They were able to rent another TV (an Escalade no less) to finish their trip. It might have been the only vehicle equipped to tow, i don't know. The TV will be repaired while they are gone and they will pick it up on their return.  I don't know the details if they rented without disclosing they were pulling a camper.  I will post more when he gets back and I get more details.

Not impossible - but might it been a auto dealer. Or might have been a local not national rental.

I can see a local GM, Ford etc dealer cracking out a dealer/repair plate to put on a 'Demo unit' when they see a large juicy repair bill coming there way...not to forget the good PR for helping out a family in a hard situation.

Most Car rental places will not even allow over the boarder transit crossing without additional insurance or assurance (larger deposit or corporate account etc...).

Would be interesting to hear verification and the outcome of this.
