I like the ones you put on the bill of a cap or I hold a small light in hand. You have to see the ground, there was a roofing spike stuck in the ground upside down that had got caught on a root, we couldn't bang it loose so we piled rocks around it until we could show the Owner, it could have gone thru a hiking boot much less flip flops and crocs that we wear. I can't believe the kids don't get hurt when they run around in the dark, in dark clothes playing Manhunt 8)

I have the kind that sticks to the bill of a cap.  Honestly, I rarely use it.  To me it is more of a novelty.  The light never seems to be where I need it.  When I am in the woods really camping I have a small 2 AA brinkman that is on my belt.  When I am in a campground I have a flashlight in the camper but only carry it if there is no moon out or I'm walking with DW.

A good headlamp will work for all those tasks you mentioned. The Petzl Tikkas are EXCELLENT; they cost a bit more, but they are not toys. They are well designed and well built.

Let us know what you think!

I haven't been able to choose a head lamp yet, I hate the weight of something that requires multiple batteries, but dislike the dimness of something that only requires one battery  :banghead:

I have a clip on the hat light and a strap on the head one.  I prefer the hat one and use it quite a bit. Just have to tweak the hat to get the light where I want it and then it follows my head. I do need to get new batteries for it.  It uses two coin cells.

I just picked up a Five LED Magnetic Head Lamp  rrom Harbor Freight Tools. It takes 3 AAA batteries, so it's light but doesn't use button cells which can be expensive or hard to find.  It can't be adjusted up and down, and the magnet fell out as soon as I opened it, but for the cost, I think I'll like it.

Use the right coupons (a free flashlight coupon and a 20% off coupon, both often found together in junk mailers) and I scored the head lamp and a flashlight for $$4.23 total!

If I can find another coupon, I might go back and get another to keep in the toolbox  ;D

I have an older Princeton!  🙂  Mine is made in USA (not sure if they are anymore) and uses 2 AA. I believe they are one of the original headlamp manufacturers!

@Mariska.......junk flyers  :tickedoff:  Those are awesome flyers.  Lots of good stuff in there.  Of course I always seem to not have a coupon when I stop.  The other flyers go in the fire starter bin.

Mariska,

The better headlamps, such as the Tikkas, use three TRIPLE A batteries. They are lightweight, and, after a bit, you almost forget you are wearing one. In addition, they swivel up and down (up is straight out; down for reading, cooking, whatever.)

I prefer to steer clear of any that require that front-to-back, over-the-head additional support strap; to me, that just signals "weighs too much."(How's the new partner working out?)
