How far in advance do you make reservations for camping?  We are pretty new at this and it seems like others book pretty far in advance.

For any years I only booked about 2 weeks in advance but with many being group trips and campgrounds being busy, it's more like 6 months now.  Holiday weekends are at least that far in advance.

I ususally book when I know that I am going somewhere, be it 8 months, 4 months, weeks, or days. No use putting off and not being able to get a site later on down the road.

Best Regards,
Norm

camping in California is probably the most competitive in the country.
we start making reservations the year before, if we can.
popular campgrounds are sold out by March, for summer reservations.
we couldn't make May reservations, for Yosemite, in February. they were already all gone. and that was off-season.
summer campsites there, are all gone in January.

other states aren't like this.

That depends on where I want to be.  If I know an area's going to be popular when I'm there I try to book as far in advance as possible.  Sometimes I just wing it and go.  I've only been disappointed once with that method.

Anywhere between 11 months and a week  🙂 We always go to the Apple Harvest Festival in Adams County, PA, and book our sites as early as we can (11 months in PA). Sometimes we know we want to get out but, like at this time of year, we'll wait till a week or less so we can see extended forecasts.

That's happening right now. We know we want to make at least one more trip, especially since we just picked up the new PU. We hoped to go this weekend but the forecast got worse as the week went on. We're hoping for next weekend...

For the places that we prefer to camp (DE Seashore State Park, DE Cape Henlopen, Assateague NP) we reserve as soon as possible (right when the booking window opens).  Years ago, we didn't have to do this; we could leave on a Friday afternoon and have our pick of the nicer sites at any of these parks.  We found out the hard way that times were-a-changin' and learned to book as far in advance as possible.
