Depends. For low dollar items -say with a FULL retail value of $50 and saving of less than $20 - within my own city. For saving of over $50 - I would drive within 1 or 2 hours.
Larger items - more expensive - and a lot more savings....I will even travel to another country! Canada/US board is just about an hour away. But has to be well worth my time and effort.
If possibly really good deals that are over too far to drive - try to get them shipped to me.

since you didn't specify for what, i'll assume that you're talking about a RV.
Also making the same assumption as bikendan.
We drove 5 hours one way just to look at the hybrid we wanted. I had found a ,steeply discounted, brand new hold over 2011 model on line. We took DW's car since it got better gas mileage just incase we decided not to buy. The dealership we bought from had another location about 2 hours closer so we made the deal and agreed to pick it up at the closer location. It worked out great & we saved about 40% off the MSRP & NADA Value.
What I have found is that sometimes it is worth it to pay a little more for the ease and convenience. Not that I won't travel at all for a deal, but my time is better spent with my family.
I would say that I would drive up to 1 hour if I have nothing better to do.
