My husband and I are looking into a program that our SP offers. We would volunteer 24 hours a week in exchange for a free three (3 ) month stay at any SP in our state. We have read up and researched the program and it seems to suit us very well. It would not be for everyone. We have an income that would follow us and we have no ties at home. The work ( volunteering would involve picking up trash ( They make it very easy as they provide a vehicle ( golf cart, mule, etc ) and a grabber. Also cleaning the bathouse ( with another volunteer ) and answering basic questions for the campers. It would work very well for us and we are very excited to start. We would start in May 2012 and it goes to September 2012. We can choose any 3 month period in that span of time. We can't wait !!!!
When I was a bachelor....sure, no problem. I used to basically do that with the Boy Scouts at my old camp.
As a married man with a 2 year old and a house, If I am camping, I want to camp. If I am putzing around/working, I want to be doing it at my own house.
As a retired man....As long as I am healthy I would give it a shot.

Yeah, I'd do that and I think my better half would go along with it just as quickly.
When I was a little younger I might not have been as keen on the idea, although I spent plenty of time helping the Boy Scouts when my son was in the program. As I get older, with my son now having his own family and not having as many demands on my time, I think I'd enjoy doing some work at a campground.

This is kind of funny. Ex DW and I used to spend a fair amount of time on and off at a local SP. During one of my stays I was talking to the ranger in charge just about volunteering my time around the CG doing site or trail maintenance. Nope, never happened.
I used to volunteer a weekend a year doing trail maintenance in the VA corridor of the Appalachian Trail. I always enjoyed that.
So, my answer would be, Yes. I'll help.
Common system here in our County Parks. Their called campground hosts. They work 20 - 30 hours a week with basic repairs, checking people in/out, selling firewood and chaperoning the campgrounds. In exchange they get free camping with full hookups. This system has kept numerous parks in our area from closing with 1 supervising ranger that watches camp ground hosts at each campground. Our local supervising Ranger oversees 5 campgrounds, with 1 - 4 hosts at each campground, and he's the only one that pulls a salary. BIG - BIG money saver for the County. Of course the number of hosts depends on the size of the campground, his largest campground has 168 sites and he uses 4 campground hosts. His smallest is only 18 sites, and has one resident campground host.
Most of the campground hosts are retired couples, fixed income, full time RV'ers. Great system that puts to use the experience and knowledge of full time campers.
