We have been using an air mattress under the foam mattress that came with our camper. However, we recently discovered that La-Z-Boy offers a mattress option on their hide-a-beds called a SlumberAir. The bottom layer is a four inch inner spring mattress, the next layer is a four inch air mattress, and it's all topped off with a zip on quilted top. We spent our first three nights on it this weekend, and it was great! Well worth the price... which isn't cheap!
We got our 2" memory foam from Overstock.com, paid around $70 and free shipping. Unlike a lot of people who use it, we are not able to close the roof with the foam on the bed. It gets folded in half and rolled up (tied in place with two old belts), then stowed on the floor. It may seem like a lot of trouble, but we definitely sleep better with it, and in all honesty it really doesn't add that much time to making the bed up when we make camp.
We bought ours from Overstock.com and it is a much nicer sleep. We have store memory foam on one bunk and a store our double sleeping bag on the other so the roof will still close.
Theres a good way to test how thick of foam you can get and still close the roof?
- Open your popup and remove the mattress from bed we will be using.
- Sit an empty tissue box (8") or other collapsible items on the bed board.
- Lay the canvas gently over top and lower the roof.
- If the box doesn't crush, then you should be able to have a 4" mattress and 4" memory foam.
OK, it's not an exact science but a good way to try it. 🙂
