Is Smokey Bear something that you talk to your kids about? Do they know of him or is it last generation?
The longest running campaign in Ad Council history, Smokey Bear and his famous warning, "Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires," was introduced to Americans in 1944. The campaign was developed to educate the public on forest fire prevention. Since its inception, Smokey's forest fire prevention campaign has reduced the number of acres lost annually from 22 million to 4 million.
Launched this year the newest PSAs in the campaign feature a modern version of Smokey Bear with the call-to-action to Get Your Smokey On and speak up if you see someone in danger of starting a wildfire.
I haven't seen a Smokey the Bear commercial in Years. I wonder what stations they are on?
There are a bunch of Smokey the Bear ad's on youtube. I like this one.

As a child, I always loved Smokey the Bear; DH used a child-size melamine plate with Smokey & Friends which is proudly displayed on my china cabinet's 'memento/history' shelf.
Someone on the next block has a 3' tall Smokey in their front yard; I've never met this person to ask about its significance.
I agree that Smokey's been absent from the public scene lately - I'm sure that public service announcements have been affected by budget cuts, but (going out on a limb here) maybe since cigarette smoking isn't as popular as it used to be, maybe there's a decrease in smoking-related fires (not sure how many fires were caused by careless smokers to begin with, just an idea and sorry if I offend any smokers out there (both DH & I are former smokers who always worried about causing forest fires, thanks in part to our Smokey exposure)).
Woodsy Owl might be making a resurgence; I've seen Woodsy and the slogan on t-shirts in the 'young men's' departments at our local Target and Kohl's stores (wish they would offer them in women's sizes!)
