I usually open my popup once or twice over the winter to check things out and just sit in it for a little while I'm counting the days to my next trip. This past weekend seemed like a good time since it was going to be sunny and in the 60s. Well, it was very foggy, never any sun, no where near the 60s and even rained a little. Errrr
I'm still glad I opened it because I had those little furry ba$%^&s - mice. I'm not really looking for a solution because I don't think there is one. I just treat them like my ex-mother in law and try to make it unenjoyable for them and hopeful they won't stay long.
Here's what I currently have:
2ea Sonic PestChaser Ultrasonic Rodent Repellent plugged in.
4ea d-CON Wedges Bait Pellets
4ea Tomcat Glue Traps for Mice
24ea Bounce Dryer Sheets
and now the latest thing I've added:
4ea Fhresh Cab Botanical Rodent Repellent
[Image Can Not Be Found]
Sorry to hear about the mice trouble.
I've read that things like those poison bait pellets are bad to put *in* your camper because they're, well, bait. They're not bad to put somewhat nearby in a bait box and hopefully kill them before they get in.
One of the other items I've read can work pretty well is one of the electronic traps. They essentially kill the mice by electrocution, and some of them even have a remote that you can keep in the house to monitor whether the trap was set off. I imagine there might be an issue with those too, since there's some bait inside of them to attract the mice to enter.
Joe,
We have a lot of mice in our area. Not enough cats. 🙁
Anyhow, the two things that have worked for me over the years with a pup are spearmint/peppermint oils similar to your fresh cab and Irish spring soap.
I personally wouldn't put anything in there that would kill them.
And one year I used bounce sheets to find the mice moved them all into an pile and made a nest out of them. >:(
No more bounce for me.
They must have made the circuit since we found mouse droppings (and smell) last Saturday. As I mentioned on the other topic, I researched here and there and asked on here if anyone had had success with Mouse-Free (mouse-free.com) and the cost. Wound up at Tractor Supply Sunday to buy the Fresh Cab @$14.99 for 3 bags, each bag lasting about 30 days each per 80 s.f. After reading the ingredients, mainly Balsam Oil and fiber, the light bulb went on in my brain. I make candles and have balsam scented oil as well as some of DH's old pharmacy essential oils at home. I mixed up a concoction of "Mistletoe" candle fragrance (very strong!), added some clove oil and peppermint oil into a steel can with removable lid. I threw in some mini pinecones (my version of absorptive fiber) and headed out to the camper. Up it went (no more evidence of mice!), in went the concoction sans lid, and now we'll see how it goes. The best things that can happen will be no more mouse intrusion and no more smell. However, we will probably remove the bed that had the droppings and urine smells to clean when the weather gets warmer/sunnier. We usually only use that bed for storage anyway, but the countertops need to be disinfected and the rest of the camper examined for mouse evidence. I let our "landlord" know his black snake must have died and he went out to check on his motor home parked by the side of the big garage with our TrailManor.
If the balsam oil works out, it's only $6.95 for 4 oz. which should last a long time. Much better price than $14.99 for the Fresh Cab and the as-yet unknown price of Mouse-Free. (Search for the video link on CanvasCampers for Mouse-Free since this is a large container that can be sprayed on the outside and under carriage with a light oil base with balsam oil.)

P.S. My research showed the best deterrent for mice is to use your camper a lot! 😀 Have your own parties and don't invite the mice!
Judy, when you spin your eyes like that...it makes me dizzy! 😮
Best suggestion yet though!
Yep got my new canvas from Bear Creek Canvas a week ago and am a little nervous about installing it when the snow melts. Left the old one on the camper, couldn't hurt it any more that's for sure !! What my father used to do with his pop up was remove the canvas every fall and store it in the attic. I think this maybe the best plan of action really and during camping season be proactive as possible to keep the critters out . It would be my luck I'd find them in my attic next ! But hey , maybe I can claim that on home owners too !!!! 8)
Well, if the patches you speak of don't do it for you,I have a speedy stitcher (that's the link). It is used to handsew canvas and leather. It uses waxed thread, which seals the stitch holes as you go. It is easy to use, and I'd be happy to show you and lend it to you. I have actually used it to replace the binding trim over the canvas seams on my bunkends which had dry rotted.
