here are some pics of me and a couple friends camping at the beach. It's Jalama beach, south of Lompoc and Vandenberg A.F.B. where I was stationed many moons ago. I started coming here in 1968 when there was nothing. The only thing here was a little clearing with telephone poles on the ground so you couldn't drive on the beach. I would back up to the poles in my station wagon, sit on the tailgate, and blast my 8 track tapes.

In the background, between the palms, you can see the mountain top(Tranquillon peak). It's the highest point on Vandenberg. Several times I had to drive my 90 foot cherry picker up there to do work. There was not a lot of room at the top with all the buildings and radar. After getting the truck turned around, and coming down around the bend with no guard rails the pucker factor was off the scale. The truck was 45 foot long and top heavy, plus the boom stuck out in front of the cab about 10 feet. I wonder why there was only a couple of us qualified to operate the truck. On week-ends we would take girls up there to watch submarine races, but don't let that get around.

heard they were going to a reservation system. did you hear anything about it while you were there?
we lived in Ventura County for many years and could never get in. after a couple of times, we gave up because of the drive out there.
but, if i can make reservations, i'm definitely going to make it a spring or fall trip.
