Having lived in CO and UT for a few years, I would Suggest the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone & Mt Rushmore as major attractions.
Colorado has some of the most beautiful sites in the continental US. We spent most of our free time exploring the Rocky's from Pikes Peak to Wyoming. There is so much to see and do in the west. I love the little side trips that take an hour or so. A couple I missed in my travels are Wall Drug in SD, it's right off rt 90 and fence post rock in Kansas. I took I-70 out and I-90 back.
If your traveling I-94 out of Yellowstone there is Pompey's Pillar just east of Billings, Mt. A little further down the road is Miles City, Mt. They have a couple museums there. Then you can drop down to Belle Fouche and catch I-90.
If I could find another job in CO I'd be moving by next week. We think about the west all the time. I agree about I-40 too, I traveled between Albuquerque and Flagstaff, it was beautiful, Arizona is my second favorite state.
Sorry for being long winded, I really miss living out there.
Steve,
I did a trip across the lower states. Seals on the beach in La Jolla, Grand Canyon, Hover Dam, Las Vegas, Petrified Forest, Indian Cliff Homes, Meteor Crater, Albuquerque Balloon Festival and a few other things. It was a great 3 weeks of camping.
Out of all of those, the Albuquerque Balloon Festival in the beginning of October with over 600 hot air balloons is just amazing and something everyone should experience if they have the opportunity.
