I got a cast iron dutch oven for Christmas and want to take it and try it out this weekend while we're camping.  I'm a little nervous to try anything too complex since this is my first attempt.  Does anyone have any fairly simple (yet yummy) recipes for a dutch oven?  I found an easy breakfast that I'm going to make...now I'm looking for something for dinner.

The easiest recipe for a DO is baked chicken. Rinse the chicken and pat dry. Put it in the DO and salt and pepper it. Heat from the top and bottom for about an hour.

We like a recipe that I came up with alone.  It's simple, doesn't require any spices other than salt and is yummy!

You can half the ingredients if you want to, but I've done it like this in a 10" DO (it was pretty thick) and a 12" DO (much better thickness):

1 can refrigerated pizza dough
2 4.5oz cans cooked chicken
2 packages of frozen broccoli and cheese
4 eggs
Salt to taste (I can't guide you here, the first one needed salt, so I just add some now)

Then, if you want to, you can add anything you like to take it up a notch.  I've used a small can of mushrooms, or black olives.  I've even used a jar of artichoke hearts; that may have been the best add-in I've tried.  ::)

Grease the DO and spread the pizza dough out as well as you can, laying it up on the sides too.  Mix all the above ingredients and add the vegetables that you'd like or not.  I cook it at 350 for about 45 minutes.  My 10" is shallow (and the quiche is deep) and my 12" DO is deep (but the quiche is thinner), so the cook times are about the same.

I seem to usually use my DO for baking.  I have done Brownies, Blueberry muffins, cinnamon rolls.  I have also done a mountain man breakfast.  I think baking is easiest.  Just mix the batter and put it in the DO.

Don't forget to season the DO

and here was my first attempt at cooking brownies in the DO.  Make sure you use the correct ingredients  :chef:

Here is a great FREE app, "Dutch Oven Calculator" to give you quick access to calculating briquettes.
