Memorial day is quickly approaching! I know I want to camping in my PUP, I know who I'm going camping with, but I have yet to decide where. (I figure I can go to a first come-first serve place if I find places are full already)
Do campgrounds fill up? Is it really as rowdy as people say it is on a holiday weekend? Where and what are you doing for Memorial Day weekend?
I have been camping or at State Parks on Holiday weekends and it is a zoo. I was tempted to go this Memorial Day weekend 'cause DW has not been camping since last July and this was an open weekend for us. I was really tempted but then I remembered.....
I remember seeing the pools or lake areas over crowded. Every picnic area occupied. Every parking spot occupied. Every campsite occupied. People with their blinged out SUV's with low profile tires and spinners "offroading" to get closer to the picnic table so they could hear their sound system cranked up to the loudest playing obscene music....yes, the lyrics were not meant to be heard by young children. Raging bonfires with raging alcoholics with raging radios. Dirty bathrooms, dumpsters overflowing, garbage littering the ground and radios blaring. Out of control dogs barking and getting loose. I remember reading about other peoples experiences and I'd say about 3/4ths of them are bad on Holiday Weekends.
I haven't been to a state park on a holiday weekned in about 4 years so I started to forget and think.....It might not be so bad :banghead: Now there is also the 1/4 of the people who do experience good times. It could be a small campground or a place that stays on top of things or they may enjoy having their own radio up loud, people do enjoy camping on Holiday Weekends. I feel that Holiday Weekends are when the novice goes camping. They don't know how to camp in the first place and they don't know the etiquette. They are "city" folks that think anything goes in the woods.
Personally.....I got the OK from DW to book at French Creek the weekend AFTER Memorial Day weekend. 6/1-3/12. I'm staying home and uncovering my pool Memorial Day weekend.
Matt O 2006 Skyline Nomad 27' travel trailer. Previously owned 1986 Coleman Columbia / 1992 Coleman Senecca / 1989 Born Free Class C RV.
I'm doing long awaited yard work. I recently got back into roller skating and I usually take my girls every Saturday after their dance class, and the landscaping has been on the back of my mind as of late. Memorial Day weekend is a good time to get caught up, since I still have Monday to rest.
Best Regards,
Norm

Mariska, I think you may live in S.E. PA. If so, check out Hibernia Park in Wagontown, Chester county. They have a nice little campground, no hook ups, but outhouses and water is available. Plus they usually have big stack of firewood available for campers. There's hiking trails, streams, ponds and Chambers Lake. I forget the camping fee, but it's not very much. Here's a link. http://dsf.chesco.org/ccparks/cwp/view.asp?a=1550&q=616010#camping
CHekc out the rallies. THere is one in Lebanon PA that my sis and I will go to . And they always have room for more. $40 for whole weekend. No hook-ups. Water at spigot. Restrooms, no showers. Plus all kinds of competitions, Horse shoes, bean bag too, washer toss, and entertainment on Sat pm too. Good deal for holiday. And not too far from home.
Hey thingette's sis, I thought about that, it's a super deal, but I thought it was really far away. Is there an address I can google?
Shellback, ha! Hibernia IS the backup CG I mentioned that's first come, first serve. lol.
Lone Lock/Matt O is scaring me, lol, but I'm going to muscle through and go anyways. If I can manage it, I'm going to camp three weekends in a row, that will be more camping than the past two years.
It is interesting to hear how many people couldn't be dragged into a CG on a holiday weekend.
Cindy: come camp with us!! It's fun, cheap! There's a pizza shop, grocery store, and a family restaurant close by. And there's a HUGE neighborhood yard sale right across the street on Saturday. Just walk over.
(Oh, and Sunday, there's volleyball competition and Bingo, might be able to win your camper a roll of toilet paper or something ;D)
Our favorite camping spot is at DE shore; traffic and crowds are usually bad every weekend from March to November, but seem to be especially bad on holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day). So, we've stayed home for the past few years.
My sis (lives 10 miles north of us) and her partner prefer to vacation in the PA mountains; they've encountered increased traffic and crowds on holiday weekends also, to the point where they just stay home too.
There's a good outcome, though: Lin has a very large house and yard (with a pool) she regularly hosts a summer kickoff family party on Memorial Day weekend - good eats, drinks, music, and games (bingo is a raucous favorite) abound.
Sharing laughs and food with family (who are our best friends also) is a wonderful summer kickoff for us; even though it's not as scenic as the shore or the mountains, we enjoy each other's company and always have a lot of thought-provoking conversation and laughter.
As I've grown older, I've grown to realize that a 'holiday' weekend is just that - a 'holiday' from all of the things that impose upon your free will.
For some, it might mean going away; crowds and traffic won't bother them as they will just be glad to get out of the house and have a break from their daily routine. Others might feel justified in not doing household chores for a couple of days and need a break from being a homeowner.
To each his or her own!
