Boondocking (flush toilets avail and cold running water) at the Hershey Roamers Annual Memorial Day Weekend Campout. More campers are needed this year, or they may not hold it.  :'( I've gone to it every year since I was 4. Met some great friends there. Was hoping to drum up some interest on the Pop-Up boards. Really need some new blood in this event.

If anyone wants more info, please give me a shout.

Ok folks, I've dug up the info on this.

When: Memorial Day Weekend (Friday to Monday, sometimes open early on Thursday).
Where: Fredericksburg, PA
What: Annual Hershey Roamer Campout/Rally
Who: Anyone who wants to come. Groups welcome. Will try to park together.

Typical attendance: 60-90 units. NEED MORE THAN LAST YEAR (63) FOR EVENT TO BE CONTINUED!!

It is held at a Fireman's Park in Fredericksburg, PA (Northern Lebanon Co). The camping club in charge is The Hershey Roamers. They are a small group, but work really hard at putting on a nice weekend. Other groups have run it over the years. The price really hasn't changed much since I was in high school for attending. Units are parked in the field. It is dry-camping. There are restrooms, but not real fancy, just flush toilets and running cold water for washing hands. There is a small playground, sandbox (which the kids practically live in all weekend), baseball field, band shell, and some outbuildings which the club running the show uses for a concession stand and raffle ticket booth. Really nice raffle prizes too, about 40 of them. Entertainment on Saturday and Sunday nights. One night entertainment is geared for the 30-50 age range, other night is for the 60 and above crowd. They try to please all. Sunday church service. They rig up a PA system so announcements can be heard by everyone.

Itinerary generally looks like this:
Friday
Registration, set up and hospitality at 8:30pm (generally cookies and punch/coffee). No entertainment on Friday.

When you send in your mail registration, if you want to camp with others, you either send them all at the same time, or put the group/club name that you'd like to be parked with. When you arrive, the registration family gives you a welcome packet full of freebies, a trash bag and event itinerary and your Chicken BBQ tickets if you ordered them. They will take you to your site/area if you are unfamiliar. They do generally put your group in the same spot every year unless you request somewhere else.

Saturday
8-9am: Registration for all games
Games begin at 9:30 or so. Horseshoes, quoits, washer toss, bean bag toss, kids games. Go all day. Generally, volleyball competition is Sunday unless there are a lot of teams. In recent years it has not been a problem.
7pm: Entertainment till 9:30 or 10 w/ a break for hospitality at 8:30.

The neighborhood across the street (about 80 homes, maybe less) do a big yard sale on Saturday. We normally walk over there to check it out. Sometimes the games start before we get back. Too much lolligagging on our parts  [:D]

Sunday
10am: Church service (You can smell the chicken BBQ all during the service as it cooks away. Yum!!)
12 noon: Chicken BBQ is ready for lunch.
1pm: Volleyball competition starts. Games from previous day are completed if necessary.
2pm: Bingo in pavillion
5pm: End of Raffle ticket buying.
6pm: Raffle announcements (they've gone to drawing the tickets and taping them up on poster board and hanging them on one of the buildings. It's much faster than calling all the numbers).
7pm: Entertainment till 10pm
8:30pm: hospitality

Monday
Pack up and go home.

Honey dipper available for a small fee on way out of park.
Trash dumpster located behind the baseball back stop for putting trash bags. Hopefully they will have a recycle area soon.

We have a great time. I've been going to that campout since I was 4 or 5. We now camp with friends we met way back then. And I think (I hope anyway), that my DD has as much fun there as I always did.

If you are interested in camping with us, let me know. As soon as I get the registration form in the mail, I will scan it and forward it to anyone that wants to go.

Alcohol is allowed at your site only. Needs to be discreet and all involved need to remain in control.

I love camping this weekend. I hope there is some interest among the members to attend. Need more attendees or the Roamers will cancel the campout  :'(

Barb,
We are camping the weekend before but are childless and have nothing booked this weekend.  How much is it and how do we book?  I have to clear it with the better half but would love to be there.

Lori and I need to take Nathan to Camp Backyard first to see how he does and what we need to do for a 1 1/2 year old.  I just realized the other day that NEXT summer he will be 2 1/2 and possibly potty trained.  If so, then I can take him camping on my own

Sorry for not replying sooner. Registration is in April when they send by snail mail the registration form. If you are interested, I'll scan the registration form when I get it and email it to you.

Would LOVE to have more campers along! My parents will be camping with us this year too (yea!! Normally they are boating this weekend). They'll be the big unit, they just bought a 33 foot RV so they can travel to see relatives all over the country. Glad they get to travel now that they are retired.

Found out today that this event is happening this year. I called the contact person and requested an application. As soon as I get it, I will scan it and email it to whoever wants one.

If you want to see the listing, go to the fcrv site: http://www.fcrv.org/calendar/state.php

Scroll down to May 27-29. It's listed as Hershey Roamer's Campout at Fredericksburg Fireman's Park. No application was available for download, nor was there an email address. I'm not surprised. They still do everything by snail mail and telephone.

Love to see a group of forum folks attend. It's a lot of fun!

Ok Folks!

Heard from the lady that handles all the registration Wednesday. She said the registration has been mailed to me! Woohoo! As soon as I get it, I will scan it and email it to whoever wants it. Just lemme know! PLEASE come! It's an awesome weekend, lots of great people and plenty to do.

Price is .... $35. That's the cheapest registration you'll find anywhere for all the benefits and entertainment you get from this weekend, hands down. And on a holiday!!

Chicken dinners are $6.50 per half. Order and $$ due with registration so local fire department can order the chickens and prepare to cook them on Sunday.

Who's in? I'll email registration to you as soon as it arrives.

(I can't wait! Best weekend ever!)

That does sound like a great time, we are stuck home for that weekend with parade plans otherwise I think we would have jumped on board.

I have to bug out on Sunday night after the entertainment due to working at 0600 Monday morning. I'll pack up right after dinner so everything stays dry and be hooked up and all while it's still daylight. Will be able to pull out when we are ready.

My sister generally packs up her tent at some point on Sunday, too. 2 nights is enough sleeping on the ground for her hubby. He says he's done enough of that in Somalia and Saudi Arabia.

5 more days! Woohoo!!! So excited! Just hoping it's not too muddy in the section we park in. Have 2 RVs to park with us this year and need some solid ground.

Come on out! You can register at the gate. It's only $40 for the weekend. Lots going on and great friends to make 🙂
