Bev and I have been talking about with all the places we go camping with water, we ought to think about trying to get into fishing.  Both of us had limited fishing experiance when very young, but that was with bread dough balls, maybe worms catching "sunnies" 3 or 4 feet from shore.  We have no idea how to really fish, and for that matter would have no idea as to what we caught if we did catch something.  How do you learn this stuff?  I tried a couple books, but they were talking things I did not understand what they were saying right from the beginning.

Check with your Department of Conservation, in Missouri they have the hooked on fishing program that teaches the fundamentals of fishing and what kind of fish are out there and how to catch them, they start out from the beginers level and move up from there with different classes offered several times a year. Hope this helped,

Matt

Are there any fisherman that are going to be attending any of the rallys?  We are going to the French Creek, (too early?) Raystown and possibly the Rocky Gap SP, Md. rally.  I would like to learn some about lake fishing if anyone would be willing to teach?

Thanks Mark, I have read through that and some other stuff, but it just isn't the same as having someone there to show and explain things.

Learning about fishing is sort of like learing how to swim ... you can read up on the subject, you can receive advice from those who know, but like swimming, sooner or later your just going to have to get into the water and have a go at it!

Bixll:
If I was home I would teach you how to fish. I'm teaching my 2 GD's now. Find a sporting goods store. I haven't been back there in quit a while I don't know what's there. They should have people there to help you. You don't need much to get started. Rod, reel, line, sinkers, hooks, swivels and license.
As I remember Brady's Run Park had a lake with trout in it.
Pack a lunch and your favoret beverage and go for it. Have the person at the sporting good store show you the basics of
casting and playing the fish. go to the lake and watch someone, but don't crowd them.  People don't like to be crowded when fishing, especially if your learning to cast.
Find a quiet spot and go for it.  I'm sure that you as well as the fish will be hooked.
Lots of luck.

Maybe the PA Fish & Boat Commission page might have something useful (http://www.fish.state.pa.us/)?

You said you were interested in lake fishing.  I agree with marobrown's post - maybe some SP's have how-to programs (for example, if you were interested in surf fishing, DE SP's have fishing classes at least twice during spring/summer, that's how DH got started with it, as well as taking a beach driving class).  I realize that a class won't give you the experience that you need, but they can be a good starting point.

Good luck!

Try your home state game and fish pages on the web sites. here in my state, they offer the kids a chance to fish for free at several differnt state parks. I'm sure they would be glad to teach the older kids how to as well! ;D They have several days each year, mostly in the spring on how to fish.
