I need to find a few winter hobbies to get me thru these few months every year. brrrrrr :-
I have two weekends plans for ice fishing at a few state parks in northeastern PA. I haven't tried it since I was a kid but I'm looking forward to it.

With the cold weather, I'd expect that we will be renting cabins and having very large campfires. :smore:
Bring on the hard water 😀 I haven't been out in a few years. It wasn't until I got married that I went ice fishing, a couple guys from work took me out to a nice mill pond and we caught pickerl all day. I've only been out a few times but it's been a blast, much more of a social scene than "warm weather" fishing. We take the lawn chairs out, drink coffee and grill some steaks for lunch.
Joecamper,
Which state parks are you going to? I live right near Beltzville Lake State Park and there are always people fishing there in the winter. I've never tried it. My DW, DS and I were going to do an ice fishing class at Mauch Chunk Lake last year, but the week they were going to have it there was a warm spell and they were concerned about having large groups of people concentrated on one part of the lake, so the class was cancelled.

I have never ice fished. Must you have one of those short little poles? Can you use a regular fishing pole or will you get laughed at? What can you use to chop the ice? I am going to be at French Creek next weekend and may take a walk out onto the ice.

You normally drill holes with an auger.

You normally fish with a smaller rod or tip-up.

after setting up a dozen tip-ups, you hide in a shelter with window, watching for a flag to pop up.

after, pack up your stuff in your sled to pull cover the ice.
Now that the holiday season is coming to an end and the ice fishing trip is only a few weeks away, I've decided to do a mod to my sled by adding PVC around the outside to better organize my gear. The sled is just plain, like this:

I'm not going this far with it but here is an example of a few others mods:

A pile of PVC and fittings, see what happens. 😀
This is the start of a PVC frame around the sled.

It's almost completed, I'm waiting to add the collapsible shovel.
