Back in The Day, if you took pictures, your choice of modes was...Manual. Canon changed that, in the early 80s, with their AE-1, which also had Aperture-Priority. Nikon followed, but with a model that also had Shutter-Priority (note the difference in philosophies: choosing aperture or shutter speed.)
Cameras that added basic Program soon followed, giving us our choice among Program, Aperture-Priority, Shutter-Priority, and good old Manual.
Then came electronics, and the switch to Digital.
When you select a Mode, WHY do you select it?
Because my DSLR is an older one and lenses are expensive. I have my camera set on Manual all of the time.
Shooting an Olympus E330, which with an adapter, can take film SLR lenses and hubby has several of those from his OM1.
I will switch to AP when I'm in the low light and to Shutter when I'm outside and wanting to capture the kids at play. Although I'm learning to use the FStops a little better now. I still have issues getting the right exposures.
