Over the holiday we were camping in north ga. I started to smell something kinda bad.

I blamed the dog the wife blamed me. I went outside and found the problem. Our battery was very hot and was starting to melt on the bottom. Question what would cause the battery to overheat. My camper is roo23ss, 2009. The battery is original. I leave battery connected all the time. I leave our roo on our north ga property year round. I have a rvport, with open sides.

thanks for any info.

My thought would be a wiring problem.  What was the condition of the wires or wiring around the battery?

It is always a good thing to have the dog around so you can blame bad smells on them  :dog:

over charging a battery leads to over heating as well.  have seen it when alternators are on the fritz in vehicles.

how old is the battery? have you checked to see if it needs refilling?

Could be overcharging? At our property I had a transfer put in with meter so I would not have to use battery. I leave the battery connected all the time. The battery's 3 plus years.
Should I disconnect battery when not in use??

Thanks for info.

May have been low on water as already suggested.

Best Regards,

your converter is a 3-stage converter and shouldn't be overcharging the battery.
so, there are two possiblilities:
1. bad converter. you have a WFCO converter and there is a troubleshooting guide in the converter's manual/paperwork. or it's available on the manufacturer's website.
2. bad battery or it was low on water.

my guess would be a bad converter. BestConverters.com has great prices on replacements and have great customer service.

i have an '07 23SS and i leave mine plugged in all the time and have never had this problem. but i always keep mine filled.

Thanks for info. The water in the battery was low. I'll check the converter this weekend when go to north ga. We are really enjoy our camper. we both are retired now and go to our property in north ga every week, when my wife is not taking her chemo treatments.

just order pugs from Bob today. next will construct inserts made of reflectix. We should be good to go when winter gets here.

have a great day Dennis

Another thing you might want to do is check the AC voltage coming into the camper to make sure it's not too high or too low.
If it's not that and the battery is ok, it's probably the converter.

I've had a pup and now the HTT with the WFCO 3 stage converter an not had a problem at all (7 years).
Both of them stayed plugged in all the time when at home, even through the winter (a lot of below freezing weather) up here.
It kept the batteries charged and ready to go without overcharging them.
I don't have a garage and don't like bringing any batteries into the basement.

since the bottom of the battery melted, is it leaking now? if it was low on acid (it's not really water you know) wouldn't cause it to overheat when it was charging?  Does this camper stay hooked up all the time? if you're not pulling it, you really don't need the battery, just unhook it.

my camper manual says when stored, I need to be plugged in for the camper to charge the battery at least 8 hours a month. of course that won't keep it charged if I leave it 'on' because the carbon monoxide detector will drain it. I put in a disconnect switch and don't leave the battery hooked up, then the night before we leave to go, I plug in to get the fridge cold anyway, so it's charged back up by then!

Ok had a simalure problem last winter.  Went camping at Fall creek Falls in TN for 4 days.  When i got home i put the camper back up to clean it.  The temp got down close or at freezing that night.  When i came back down the next day i found peices of my battery box out in front of the camper and when i took the lid off i found my battery had exploded.  Being ex mechanic and garage owner i started investigating.  A battery that is low on fluid can freeze during freezing temps.  But also if the converter gets hung up in bulk charge mode, it can overcharge and cause problems.  Mine was a combination of both.  The water was a little low and the converter was hung up in bulk mode.  I took the cover off the converter and used can of compressed air and blew TONS of dust and crap out of it.  Tested it and it started working great.

Long story short, keep fluid topped off and converter clean and free of dust.  And yes if you are storing your camper it is best to have an external battery tender hooked up to it to keep it healthy.

And i also live in N GA(blairsville) if you need anything let me know
