A long time reader but new member from Asheville NC.  I don't own a camper yet but I grew up camping and look forward to getting my family involved.  I'm just not sure where to start?

Welcome from PA.  What does your family consist of?  Wife, Kids, Pets?  Depending on what you are willing to do I'd say the first step is to buy a tent or to start looking on Craigslist at a few used campers to see what you can get for your budget.

Howdy Jack from a former Halifax County (northern I-95) guy.

Where to start?  Start with Craigslist, eBay, dealers.  I know in your neck of the woods there were dealers along I-40.  (Actually, they were closer to Greensboro.)

Make a list of Needs (have to have) and Wants (nice to have) features for what you feel your camper should have for you.  From that list start asking questions of us, the dealers and other owners about what will fit your need.

Keep in mind your tow vehicle's max towing limit unless you plan on upgrading in that world as well.

Welcome aboard!

Welcome from Georgia!  My family and I are pretty new to PUPs also.  One suggestion from my mistake.  If you buy a used camper, check the roof real close inside and out.  If you see any ripples or waves, or if the ceiling is spongy on the inside, drop the price a bunch or keep looking.  I just had to do some major roof repairs and it got pretty intense.  Do a lot of reading online before you buy.  You will learn a lot on this site.
Happy Camping!
