I have purchased a few retractable dog leashes from Harbor Freight and must say that I'm pleasantly surprised how nice they are.  Much of their stuff can be hit or miss.

24 Ft. Retractable Dog Leash - $6.00

I have seen one there that has a reflective strip in the leash.  I have thought of picking it up for walking Basil at night.  Glad to hear you like them.

I keep a 6' leash in our TV and an 15'. When we arrive I'm ready to let Ziggy out and attach him to a tree or something while we unload. I got these at Wal Mart and they work well. When walking around we simply use the 6' and back at the camp we attach the 6' to the 15'. Usually they have to be tethered at any camp. The retractable leashes I wonder how he would do since he's trying to run us and chokes himself. He's not used to leash as of yet.

Personally while teaching the dog to walk with you - keep a short leash on him. There is allot of "doggie" training programs/classes out there...I would investigate and enroll in one.

I ALL WAYS do with my dogs...  It is more to train ME....but also cause it socialized my new dog to others - so my dog know not to run up to every NEW dog it sees (specially if there are over 10 feet away).

Teaching your dog properly and TEACHING yourself on how to control your dog will prevent the choking, the constant tugging,  running from one end to the other end of the leash, and tree wrapping in your daily dog walking experience.

I find my old lab (a strong headed bread) stays near me and knows when it can leave my side and rarely goes to the end of the leash (unless she stops to investigate who "else" stopped at a pole/tree/fence/fire hydrant etc.... and I keep walking)

Couldn't agree more jfilz! We only have been three times now and we are working with Ziggy, he found us (he is seven) and he hasn't been out of the house until our camping adventures! Hard to teach older dog's new tricks 🙂

I have used techniques I have learned even with other peoples dogs that have "issues" - and it works (though memory retention is not as easy for older dog or for there owners).

Even older dogs with "issues".  The old saying "Can't teach an old dog new tricks" is not always true. Rolling over and speak is a bit harder to do with old dogs but can be done.  Sit heal stay - I can get nearly any dog to do a few hours of training.  Much easier if they have a treat they love (but rarely give them)!
