While I agree with 99.9% of this post, I did not notice any mention of a towing vehicle and it's tow capacity as being important in determining the weight range of the camper to be considered for purchase. Of course I wouldn't expect anyone to consider purchasing a bahemoth of a camper and try to tow with a VW bug!
All great ideas... but one more factor for the first time buyer... if this is for a family.. be sure to bring the "whole" family.. there WILL be days that it will rain and the whole family will be in the camper for long periods, if you have kids, they tend to get hyper being confined...
another note, if you have toddlers and plan to keep them on the back of the bunk end, be sure the canvas is secured that they do not roll out (Starcraft ends are complete closed and just the sides are bungeed)
if you decide to go with "used" check around to camping groups to find someone in your area that is experienced and contact that person to see if they would mind helping you look over the camper to be sure there is nothing you are missing.. alos you can post what you are looking at to see if anyone know pros and cons with the model (there was one model of popup that had a huge roof problem - not sure if it was in the 80's or 90's, but there were issues for several years)..
