We lost power Monday and are still without it. Our generator came in, and we use it for a few hours at night first to run a spaceheater, then to run a tv (playing movies) & recharging the cell phones, lanterns and Nook.
Latest estimate by JCP&L is power will be restored by Nov 7!!!! That would be 9 days with no power = no heat, no water, no lights...
We are pretty comfortable right now, but to get gas for the car or the generator is a few hour wait. So we are trying to not drive the car and use the generator very sparingly. I just hope the gas we have holds out ... the temperatures are supposed to really start dropping in the next few days, 20's at night.
This is the 3rd time in 14 months that we've lost power for 4 or more days. This is really starting to get old. Not just that the house temp is hovering in the mid-50's, that gas is difficult to get, but we also have a well, so water is also a pain.
Ok - rant over...now back to your regularly scheduled program...

Dawn,
Can you get Joe to disconnect the water pump from the circuit breaker box?
You could then hook up the water pump to the generator.
Same goes for your heat, if it's oil hot water or forced air. You can usually pick up the power at the box right at the furnace.
Just make sure you disconnect the furnace from the breaker box.
As long as you genny is big enough you should be able to run those along with a fridge and a couple of lights.
Good luck.
Hope everyone is getting by best as possible and there ARE NO PHYSICAL injuries to you and your family members. We are all still safe in north jersey, but were hit pretty hard! Huge 100 year old oak tree took out power and our road sunday night 6 pm of the storm and been without power ever since (been a whole week now and told may be a another week) All I can say is thank god I am a camper and have all my camping supplies. It's funny just about emptied the pups supplies into the living room and we are getting by. Never realized by having the pup fully stocked and ready to go it truly doubles as an emergency stock pile for a disaster. Currently At my brother in laws several towns away getting my fix of electricity and computers. Once again My family and I wish you all well if you have been effected by the storm and hope you stay safe during these difficult times I know first hand how exhausting it can be both physically and emotionally, Hang in there! Jonathan and Family
Lou - still no power. Power company says "Wednesday", but the linemen we saw on Sunday told us that they can't find the problem, and it could be another 10 days. Joe's mom is in Roxbury Township, they had one of the substations go - they were told Dec 1 for power...
We're another storm on the way in NY/NJ - a Nor'easter is expected on Wednesday. I'm praying we don't get the 55 MPH winds they are predicting. If we get them, then power that has been restored could likely go back out again.

Oh man! Good thing you got your generator! That thing is paying for itself!

Not exactly...the new generator didn't work.
We put in oil and gas, pulled the start cord. Heard pop, pop, POP ! then the "overload" light came on. (we didn't have anything plugged into it). Called electricgeneratorsdirect.com (where we purchased it) - - they say "sounds like an electric control issue" - -
can't return it via mail because it had oil & gas in it...have to take it to a authorized Generac repair facility. Contacted the local facility, it could take a while to get the parts to fix it. I'm thinking "what do you mean fix it?, it is brand new - I want another new one, not a fixed one".
Did I mention our emergency radio didn't work either?
And we are now at 8 days and counting for no power...
You know the saying that when life hands you lemons, to make lemonade? I tried to make Lemonade with the lemons, but we are just about out of potable water 😉
Even though I call myself GA (Georgia) Judy, my native state is NJ and I have friends and acquaintances who still live there as well as in Staten Island and Long Island. It breaks my heart as I see the Nor'easter headed that way, and I am praying for all in the path of this weather. Thank goodness many of you are prepared because of being campers, but we know there are many in need. Let us know what we can do to help. I have sent in a donation to my church's Disaster Relief and I know they are helping as well.
It's a shame that mother nature has to be mean and disruptive to some people to see the true sides of Government and people who is in charge. I feel sorry for all those who's lives have been disruptive because of this! my prayers are going out to all of you! Mtnbikers, I am glad you and other campers in the area was a little prepared for this event. I know no one ever imagined it would take this long to get power back on or to get gasoline back readily available back to all of you! It's great that others in the area can give a little help when needed like a hot shower and other things! I know that if a bad storm hit in our area, I would be out to help cutting trees, searching for the missing or even helping with food or gas if needed. I have in the past and I will continue to today even though I am retired from the fire service, doesn't mean I am completely out of service! May God be with all of you up north that is suffering that he might bring you all some relief and comfort soon!
Dawn,
Glad you are back to civilization. 😉
I also couldn't agree more. Last year CT was hit bad by the Halloween Nor'easter.
I have been looking at the propane fired gas inserts in the fireplace.
They can easily heat our house (40 to 60K btu) with minimal electricity. And give us another heat source when oil goes sky high in price.
A 5K generator would be overkill for us then. I'll just have to put it a power switch to make it easy.
Four of us, two birds and a dog spent 4 days last year in our HTT until the power came back on.
We were in the 20's to 30's and I didn't use a full 20 lb tank for heat with the bunk ends open.
Had to keep it at 70 degrees for the tropical birds.
The 2400 Yamaha supplied power for the HTT and fridge and freezer in the house as well.
