Glad to hear some folks made it through on good old ingenuity (i.e., preparedness and camping know-how ).
I agree with Fire Captain Jim as for helping get the help out to those in need. We had a bad storm with severe flooding about 4 yrs. ago and it wiped out homes in our county and some surrounding areas. Our church was on schedule for a large meeting of other churches (our Presbytery of 47 churches) and all the food we had for their lunch went instead to many first responders and those we could find on their own properties cleaning up. The denomination also collected buckets of clean up materials to be distributed for the asking and personal items, clothing, and blankets/linens were also collected and delivered to folks. No one was asked to show their union cards (since we are a right-to-work state) and everyone gave from their hearts and pockets. We would and do continue to follow our consciences.
As for preparedness, many of my friends and acquaintances think (or maybe that is past tense - thought) we were a bit crazy to buy freeze dried and dehydrated food as well as store some other supplies just in case. That doesn't sound so crazy now and I hope folks will gain the "lost" knowledge of being as self-sufficent as possible in order to help one's family and friends when the need arises.
Sounds like a new topic: Emergency Preparedness
