Take the insurance the screen replacement alone is half the cost of the phone  I have seen them shatter from 3 feet. just make sure the insurance covers theft and unintentional damage like dropping the phone or if it fell in lake or pool by accident. You can always cancel the insurance at anytime there are company's that specialize in just offering electronic and phone insurance look into those may be cheaper and a better coverage check out a compnay called "square trade" They are totally legit

I took the insurance on both my kids iPhone's and have replaced them for free when they broke.

only 2 buttons not working....that would suck.

Hands down I would get the insurance on my son when he gets a phone.  I am just thinking I am an adult and could handle a $400 device....that is what I am wrestling with.

I never thought of an outside company for insurance......Hmmmmm

Anyone NOT have the insurance and are glad they don't?

I don't have insurance and have had my phone for close to two years, but I did get an Otterbox Defender Case and have dropped it a few times and had no issues.

I am going to get a case for it.  I was thinking that that would be my insurance policy....but I am leaning towards the case and insurance now.

I am also going to look into Viking's non apple insurance.

Be aware that if you buy a case for this phone when you decide to upgrade you will have to buy another case because the one you buy now will not fit.  I have an otterbox and no insurance.  I have dropped mine several times (even once on gravel) and thankfully no issues.  Unless you are a hardcore athlete that would be putting your phone in peril I just hate to think about the cost of insurance so evaluate your lifestyle.

I got the apple insurance and dropped the Verizon insurance.  I kind of wish I didn't.  I haven't looked into it, but as I recall the apple care only lasted for a year and was not renewable.  The Verizon insurance can only be bought the day (or maybe within a few days) of when you get the phone.

I've dropped my iphone on the ground multiple times.  I've dropped and had it bounce under my car, in the cat litter (eeow!) and just this Sunday it went flying out of my pocket and skidded across the campground office's porch.  It's still ok, but I really need to pull out my defender case before this weekend.

Several years ago my arm hit my phone as I was bowling and the phone flew down the bowling alley.  Since it's super slippery and you're not allowed to step past the line, I had to have an employee get it.  Turns out that was the first time they had that happen...  :omg:

If you kill the screen, that's expensive.  You could replace the screen with a cheaper, non OEM one, but the cheaper ones break easier.  My friend's boyfriend used a cheaper screen, and a few weeks later the phone fell off the couch and the screen cracked.

I suggest going with Verizon, if it's still a possibility. If you decide not to use insurance, get a GOOD case, not just a case.

If you get the Otterbox Defender, it works. My SIL is pretty destructive with his phones over the years, but when he got the case, it really helped. I don't like it because it's kind of heavy and I don't go in and out of beer vats servicing and cleaning the lines in breweries either!

Look into squaretrade.  Sqaretrade.com.  excellent insurance.  I've used them for just about all of our expensive electronics.  Have replaced phones and printers with no problems.

I am very klutzy and will drop a phone or something fragile within seconds of handling it. I have the insurance and don't mind paying it.

I am glad to hear others have had good luck with SquareTrade, and I have purchased 2 warranties from them at very reasonable prices. The first eventully expired as the covered product never needed any work. However, within the warranty period for the 2nd item, my camera stopped functioning and SquareTrade would not honor the warranty. I will never buy coverage from them due to this "dishonest" conduct.  When I bought my smartphone a few months ago, I saw Sq.Tr. was advertised as a source for coverage but never gave it a thought.

Here is an update......reminder, I have an iPhone 4.  I got an Outter Box for it.  The $75 one.  It seems pretty strong and protective.  I like it.  It adds bulk to it, but nowadays the phones seem too small and lightweight.  Pretty soon we'll be holding up a business card sized phone which I just find unnatural to hold.  So I like the bulk.

As for insurance, I was at the Apple Store for something for my mac when I got the Outter Box.  I started talking with the guy about insurance.  He said they have insurance for $100 per year with a $50 deductible.  He said that yes it is a $400 phone brand new.  But as long as you have something to mail back, no matter how many pieces it is, it will only cost $150 to replace.  So with that math and the Outter Box I said screw it, I'm not getting it.

Lone Lock,

Interesting that they said you would get a new phone.  AT&T folks I talked to said that you would get a refurbished phone not a new one so I opted out and just spent the $50 for an otter box.

I just pulled out my paperwork for my Samsung Galaxy III that I bought in December, 2012. It has a 1-yr. mfg. warranty plus a 1-yr. additional from Costco. Let's see how it goes tomorrow when I bring my phone in to Costco. (I'm assuming they will send me to AT&T but Costco is first on the list.) For 3 days, I have charged my phone each night with the power down to about 53% or less. The phone got hot to the touch about then - 3 days ago - and now it won't hold a charge. Every morning when I unplug it, it's "charged," but then an hour or two afterward, I try to make a call and find a "critical battery low" message and notice to recharge. Huh?  😮 I'm only 6 mos. into actually owning the phone and I don't do anything with it but use it as a phone and read email, occasionally search for something and go on CanvasCampers.
