I did not pay attention in Science class when they went over weather....OK, I probably could have paid a lot more attention in all of my subjects.
When I read the weather online or see it on TV I sometimes don't really know what they are talking about. The for Downingtown PAat 1pm on 1/20/12 is calling for 1-3 inches of snow accumulating tonight and 1-3 inches of snow expected for Saturday. Does that mean that it is going to snow 1-3 inches tonight, and they expect an additional 1-3 inches of snow on Saturday for a total of up to 6 inches? or do they mean 1-3 total over the next few days?
-What is a Wintry Mix? Does that mean it will be more Snow or will it be Rain with some Snow mixed in?
-Partly Cloudy or Partly Sunny....aren't they the same?
Is anyone else as confused as I am when I read the weather?
By the way, I already picked up my eggs, bread, and milk

Of course we're going to have French Toast this weekend 😉 What snowfall is complete without it?
Norm, Sounds like you have been plowing snow for a long time.....My bro did it for 20 years with his company. He loved it at first. Dollar signs falling from the sky. At the end he could not care less about the OT.

I always thought that was bread, milk and toilet paper -- not necessarily all for eating, obviously.
Here's my understanding of them:
- [li]I think the snow totals are for the specific reporting period. So if they're calling for 1-3" tonight and 1-3" Saturday, then you should expect 2-6 inches.[/li]
[li]Here's the spectrum of cloudiness as I understand it: Sunny -> Mostly Sunny -> Partly Cloudy -> Partly Sunny -> Mostly Cloudy -> Cloudy[/li]
[li]Wintry mix: two or more of rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow.[/li]
I could be wrong, but those definitions have held up for me so far.

Luckily, I don't plow, I work in the garage parts room for NJDOT, so I am warm and don't have to deal with the white stuff. It pays off the credit card every year, so I don't mind it.
Wintery mix = 1 part Malibu rum, 2 parts milk, 1 cup ice. Blend well. ROFL. Damn, I'm funny.
To answer the first part of your Q, 1-3" of snow overnight and an additional 1-3" Saturday with the potential of 2-6" accumulation.
Wintery mix=sleet, snow and/or rain.
Partly cloudy=MOSTLY sunny.
Partly sunny=MOSTLY cloudy.
I used to work with weather guessers in the military.
I didn't go to the store (if it's not already on hand, we don't need it for the few hours we might be prevented from going out!) but I did get the tractor ready to go.
Now that I did that, the storm should miss us! It's usually the times I don't bother checking the tractor that I end up finding something that needs attention ... and laying in the snow to do it. >:(
John
We wound up getting about 3-4 inches. I should have measured but I just didn't.
I like Steve's definition of Wintry Mix
We did have French Toast on Sunday morning. I was shoveling while DW made breakfast for DS on Saturday.
