From The Deer Hunter:
Army Doctor: Chevotarevich, is that a Russian name?
Nick: No, it's an American name.
I grew up during the latter part of the Cold War with a Slavic surname and heritage (Ukrainian). My father honored his draft notice to serve in Vietnam and his father before him (first-generation American) volunteered to serve in WW2 (wound up on an infantry team in Northern Italy). This quote is especially poignant for me, as it often made my family upset to be mistaken for the nationality that oppressed our native nation (Ukraine) and was the enemy of the America that we had committed to assimilate into, love, and serve.
And now for the weather, we'll have to go all the way to Washington and Walter Cronkite, Walter what's the weather like? I just want begin by saying to Roosevelt E. Roosevelt- What it is, what it shall be, what it was. The weather outside today is hot and sh**** with continued hot and sh**** in the afternoon, tomorrow chance of continued crappy with a pissy weather front coming down from the north. Basically it's hotter than a snakes ass in a wagon rot.
Robin Williams- Good Morning Vietnam
My favorite:
We won again! This is good, but what is best in life?
The open steppe, fleet horse, falcons at your wrist, and the wind in your hair.
Wrong!
Conan! What is best in life?
To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women!
