My boyfriend and I just bought a 1979 Jayco Jayking popup a few weeks ago and are planning a camping trip for the weekend of the 23rd, 24th, and 25th. We are having problems setting up the awning and need to have it figured out before then. Does anyone have any experience with this model year or similar? We would really appreciate the help! Thanks so much!!
Here's a drawing of the Trimline (A&E) awning poles without the canopy. I'm not sure if this is similar to the one you have, but it will give you an idea.

Here's the awning on our old trailer.

You roll it out, put down the poles that go to the ground first, then pull out the twist-lock poles and extend them until the awning is tight and lock them.
It's a two-person job until you've done it a few times.
Here is a video I did of Mariska Hargitay setting up her awning with her bro, me, and Joe (the mayor).
When you unroll the awning, you should have 2 uprights and the bar that is attached to the canvas somehow. Some awnings have at least 2 more arms (found in the bumper or inside the camper or lost many years ago) that come from the roof to the bar that is attached to the canvas. This stretches out the canvas and the awning will stay up on its own on a non windy day. If you do not have these poles that stretch out the canvas, tie at least 1 (preferably 2) ropes to each upright. Stake these ropes to the ground at angles to pull the uprights to stretch the canvas like a tent.
