Opening up the camper (not like you think)

I've been camping a quite a few years and have been to a dozen or so RV shows over the winters.  I couldn't help but to check out the popup campers, especially when the dealer removes the main side canvas panel on the camper to make it easy to see inside.  It makes everything look really big and roomy.  ::) Soooo...

I've been giving some thought to using my add-a-room top keep the bugs out and opening up the camper.  Leave the door hanging from the ceiling and remove that large window next to it.  I've set it up at home yesterday and plan to camp like this over the weekend.  DF doesn't read most of the threads so she probably won't know until she arrives Thursday afternoon.

Here is what it looks like:
Unzip the right side next to the bunkend.
[smg id=324]
Remove one screw to slide the panel out of the upper and lower track.
[smg id=325]
What it looks like with the panel removed.
[smg id=326]
Clip along the one side to close the gap between the add-a-room and bunkend canvas.
[smg id=327]
[smg id=328]
[smg id=329]

Cross your fingers and we'll see how it goes.  I'm bringing the window panel if I need to replace it or have an issue.

Love the idea but it would never work here in Oklahoma. Either the wind would be to much or the heat would kill ya!

The extra room (or so it seems!) is awesome. I hope it works out for ya!!!

I've thought of giving it a try, just haven't yet.  Looking forward to the trip report.  They sure do look a heck of a lot bigger with the panel removed though.

Only problem I see with it is that we sit under our canapy a lot and would really miss it.  If I remember correctly, you normally set your kitchen up under it don't you?

We don't normally sit under the awning unless it's raining and then we can use the 10x10.  I am going to set up the camp kitchen, just the lower half with the three table tops and storage.  It is lower the side wall of the camper.

Try it and see how it goes.  😮

The main disadvantage I can see is if you have to cook out there if it's raining. The smoke and odors would fill the enitre PUP. We use our AAR all the time and have had to close the side panel windows due to cooking. It's worth a shot but I would just open the curtains and the window and call it good.

I love the extra room it gives you.  I will be curious to see how it works.  I have an enclosed tent for around the picnic table.  It is great for shade but I have found that it keeps more bugs in than out.  They just seem to come up from the ground and then can not get out.

With taking the side down off the camper - I didn't see any side curtains remaining...how you planning on getting changed without closing the curtains on the add-a-room? :dunno:

Other than that, it certain gives you lots of extra space

I was wondering about the privacy thing also but then I noticed what looks like shakes rolled up on top of each screen.

I didn't say I had it all worked out.  😮 There are solid panels on the outside of the add-a-room.  I can still hang the curtains where the panel was if needed and there is a privacy curtain for the toilet/shower.  We don't normally use the bathroom now that the kids are older.

Joe, did I miss something? Last I remember you bought an Avalon. That certainly has plenty of room...

What about leaving the panel attached at the top and being able to roll it up when you want a big open room and closing it when you want privacy?

I have thought many times doing that.  My DH does not think it is a good idea.  We have a Sun Valley with the AAR.  The AAR has only been used a few times, this would open the pup up more.

Please continue to post, I am curious how you like it over time.

We opened it up this past weekend and it worked great.  The family and weather was very comfortable.

Thing things to consider:
1) site slopes next to pad in add-a-room area (happened to us but worked)
2) skunks running around at night (also happened to us)
3) if you need heat in the middle of the night (not us)
4) cooking in the room and the smell fills the camper (this was a good thing, bacon got everyone out of bed)
5)
