Putting a new cabinet in my Popup

After going on my first trip of the season last weekend and seeing the condition of my pup and going to an RV show a few weeks ago I have come to the realization that the current pup is not in bad shape and I'm not getting a new pup or HTT any time soon.  So I was looking at my layout and realized that the small 2 person table is just dumb and not a very good use of the space.  I was thinking about putting a cabinet of some sort in there.

I think I will take the single seat by the door and move that along the back so there is one long bench along the back wall.  The small pedestal table I will set up so that I can use it as a cocktail table where the big table normally goes.  I don't like having the big table in the pup but I do like having a place to put a drink or snack down.

If we put a cabinet there it will give us more storage space and counter space.  We can put a suitcase there or something to help declutter the pup while camping.  Then I would like to make a cabinet, but how do I access it?  Do I put doors on it or drawers?  To I make a shelf in the cabinet?  That is what I am thinking of right now.

Many people have a goucho or cabinet in a similar area.  Do you have drawers or doors?  Which do you think is a better use of space?  I have also been thinking of having a way to have "2" countertops.....in essence having a table on top of the cabinet.  This way I can put a suitcase on the top counter yet still have counterspace to put my flashlight, cup, etc.  What do you think of that?

I don't like drawers.  With drawers, there is a lot of wasted space.  The couch in my Bayside had a drawer under it.  I removed that to give me more space under there.

Before.  See all that wasted space around the drawer?

After.  That grill and stove now ride in the front trunk.

Fritz what's on top of the drawers you disassembled?  Countertop, or bench seating?

Matt O. I wonder if you could do a cabinet like Rusty has?  His looked like a wardrobe, and had a TV mounted on the outside.  I didn't take a good look at it, because I was so thrown that his camper was so different from mine (same make and year, but quite different!).  But from what I did see it looked pretty cool.

Sounds like (and looks like, thanks fritz) I won't be doing a drawer.  Should I make the countertop hinged so I can flip it up like a bench and doors to get in the side?

You definitely lose space with drawers. If you're building your own, you can minimize the amount of lose with careful planning (something manufacturers don't necessarily do) and drawer guide selection. We're looking at removing the drawer under one of our dinette seats because there's so much wasted space.

I'd hinge the countertop and also put door(s) on it. I had cut and hinged one of the counters on the Flagstaff so we wouldn't have to bend and contort ourselves to get at the contents. You could easily access the cabinet when standing in the door or, better yet, kneeling on the step, but from the inside it was almost impossible.

You'll gain a lot of good useable space just be removing that one seat!

That's the couch in front of the rear bunk.  So bench seating.

Ours is a counter. Make it solid enough to hold rear ends in case you end up with extras inside for a card game or something.

Wish the counter hinged. Would make it easier to view the stuff inside, or at least get more light on the subject.
