Well,Sunday here on the East coast was spectacular it got up to 74 degrees in Northern NJ. So I decided not to wait till the spring and I popped up the pup and slide out the beds. Last trip i was on (Kneobles) a few weeks ago I was strapping down the canvass to the bunk ends and one loop ripped right off in my hands. I did a rube Goldberg at the camp site and tied a loop in the bungee to make it work and added it to my list of repairs for the winter. Fast forward to this week. I had found a local camping store in my area called Ramsey outdoor that carried the exact bungee cord replacement at only .40 cents a foot and they even had the o ring crimpers for a nickel to keep the loops in place. I bought 20 feet . I only need a few tools to do the job, I regular pliers that has an circle cut out to crimp the o rings a scissor to cut the length of bungee cord a tape measure, roll of electrical tape, a lighter and a giant snake to feed the new bungee through the canvass. I used a wire coat hanger that I cut and straightend out for this (I also filed the ends and wrapped them in electrical tape so i didn't rip the canvass as i feed the bungees trough the canvass.) First thing I did was to cut the loop off one of the existing bungees and slide it out of the canvass lye it next to the tape measure and get a measurement for the new cord. second measure off the size of bungee cord you need with the loops and all and cut the cord and heat the ends that you cut with a lighter so the cord doesn't unravel. I made a loop the same size as the old one on one end and crimped it with the wire o ring then i took the other end and taped it to the wire hanger and slipped it through the canvass making sure i came out through the eyelet on the other end, Remove the tape and hanger and make the loop on that end and crimp the metal onto cord and wow it was an exact replacement to the 36 year old tie downs that were on the pup. Repeated 3 more times and that was it i had all new shock cord on the bunk ends. For less then 10.00 an under 1 hour of my time it was a well worth project for a sunny afternoon to know they wont rip off in my hands while setting up on one of my next years camping trips. I strongly believe anyone can do this simple repair to avoid a little aggravation and stress at the camp site. I will try to take some pictures of the cord and crimps and the cord attached to the coat hanger this week to assist anyone that is thinking of doing this kind of repair.
Great to hear, Telling you should take less than an hour I set up a folding table next to pup laided out my tools and material and really enjoy the results . I actually ordered the cleat tie backs that hold the bungees under the bunks from viking for .60 cents each I figured why change one sock without the other if you know what i mean. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they changed them from a plastic round looking pulley to a flat metal tab with a hook that wont get crushed when you slide bunks in and out! If you or anyone needs the viking info to order the bunk end cleats to hold the bungee cord under the bunks simply contact Paula in the parts dept. of Coachman Industries (Viking RV) at 269 467 6321 they are located at 580 w. Burroak street Centerville MI 49032 They have been extremely helpful now and in the past for finding old and outdated pup parts.
I realize this is an older thread here, but I was wondering if anyone could point me to a source for the replacement bungee cord? (had a bad experience with the local Camping World and don't want to deal with them) Anything online perhaps? Also, I could use a source for pop up canvas, not the entire replacement, but just yardage, I'm going to need to patch some holes around the bottom edges and don't have the cash to replace the whole thing this year.
Thanks!
You might want to try http://www.canvasreplacements.com for both items. Good luck.
I hope they will enjoy camping, too. With the weather warming and nature stirring, it might help kindle the campfires! I looked on that link and didn't find your specific items, but you can call them and see if they can help. I had to do that way back with lift arms as they were not on their website. Very helpful company!
