We've decided we would like to drive out to the Grand Canyon, 5/24-6/6.  We don't plan on towing the trailer, because of time constraints (I only have 2 weeks vacation). My thought is tent camping along the way and at the park. I figured what I would pay for one of those instant set up tents (Larry is past setting up our old coleman tent) is comparable to one night at a Grand Canyon Hotel.  Has anyone ever done this, and I'm sure alot of you have.  We will be leaving out from the Birmingham, AL area, to Memphis hit I40 and across. Coming back home on a different route, stopping at Carlsbad, Roswell, The Alamo. We would probably be taking my SUV, so we couldn't take everything and the kitchen sink too. Please,  any and all suggestions and tips are welcome!

Kip,  this just what I need to hear. I have absolutely no idea as to what is out in that direction.  Been to Central Texas in the fall, and southern California all throughout the year, but never to the "cowboy west".  So will it be extremely hot then?  That may certainly change things.

Did that.  Went to see the Bear Tooth with Corolla & tent.  Bought a popup for the Oregon trip.

The problem with Corolla/tent was inability to get relaxing time in.  That could have been a mental problem on my part.  Plan for down time & place.

Of course, both the Bear Tooth and Oregon trips were just me.

Think about motels for the one night stands enroute and tent at your multi-day destinations.

Campgrounds: The Navy Campground in Memphis isn't worth going off route for.  Tinker AFB in OKC is nice.  Do the Cowboy Museum and Bombing Memorial.

Enjoy

Thanks Joel for the tips.  We were looking at Tinker, and do have friends and family in Phoenix , Mesa and Austin.  I've been worrying about is this too much, to be able to relax and enjoy it. I think our multi night stay will only be at the grand canyon.

Better motel it then, until the GC.  And you still might wind up too exhausted to enjoy.  My rule is "at most one one night stand in a row".

I know you're younger than us, but these old folks need their down time.  We learned early on that any multi-day stop had to include at least one day with nothing planned.

Brutal?  Did you have to describe it that way?

Thank you for the chart, that's very helpful breaking it down like that. I'll let Larry look it over. (Now Joel you know we're no spring chickens here  :turtle:)
