I need to add a basket rack to the back of my PUP to carry my generator and gas can. I have red the recomedations of adding weight to the back/bumper of the PUP. My idea is weld a hitch extender on the back of the rear bumper and frame to add strength. Any additional recomendation from somebody that have made this conversion?
Wouldn't do it, your best bet is to get a hitch for the front of your Tahoe and put the basket up there.

I have seen this debate before. Don't add something to the back of a pup, it throws the weight off and creates sway, the bumper is weak, on and on. I have heard a story about someone adding a bike rack to the bumper and putting 3 nice bikes on it. The bikes were there when they left the house, but not there when they got to the campground >:(
The ways around this that I have seen is to compensate with some weight on the tongue and to make super sure that the bumper and mounts are strong and can support the basket.
Personally I don't have the skill to strengthen the bumper or the mind to start calculating weight. I tow with a full size van often so room is not a problem.

I have seen the debate as well. So after reading all the debates I decided I had to find out myself. I pulled the stamped bumper off, welded in a 3/16x4x3 angle iron between the box rails, welded the reciever to that then put the stamped bumper back on. That being said I have a Coleman Mesa with the front trunk so I can balance the weight. I have carried a four place bike rack, and a hitch hauler. The only issue I have is the bounce that far back on the rig, so I moved the bikes up front with another mod, but the hitch hauler is still used to carry coolers, firewood, and the generator.
