Looking for a truck for a possible new tow vehicle. We have 2 dogs that would need to go back in the bed and we would get a cap. Question is how do we get a/c back there for the pups so they don't get hot?

As for getting AC in the bed of the truck, I don't know. Even with a sliding rear window & somehow rigging up a little fan, I doubt it would get cool enough in the bed. A cap with sliding windows & pet screens installed would give fresh air & ventilation from the outside while driving. You would also want to consider a ramp for Rosie to get in & out of the bed of the truck. With her size, that's a big leap for her joints.

Have you considered a Suburban as a tow vehicle?

We actually like the Nissan NV3500 passenger van. Has tow rating of 9400# and half the price of a conversion van. Just checking all options for a tow vehicle

My parents did a truck cap and slider window for us kids.  It worked for Heat and air.  There was an inflatable thing that went in the opening.  I don't remember getting really hot or cold with that system and we had relatives 4 hours away that we went to see at all times of the year.

They sell a rubber boot that will seal the cab to the cap and you can have just 1 pane of glass for the cab there.  On my Tundra the entire rear pane of glass slides down so you can open the entire rear which is cool.  If you max out the AC I'm sure you can cool the bed of the truck or do the same with the heat.

Butch/Jenn: I think I'd go the Suburban route too.

I don't think that truck had AC, my dear sister. But, at the time, neither did the house. We were just used to the heat better. Truck cap had windows too, so I think parents just opened the front windows and the air flowed through.

I have read on another forum that is what they do with their dogs, cages in the back and they open the rear slider and the air keeps them cool. You can use a n inner tube in between the cab and the cap, that is what we used to do with our old slide in back in the 70's.

Here is a pic of the cap boot I remember my dad's friend having on his truck.  it was somehow "glued" to the cab of the truck.

I looked up that inflatable boot after you mentioned it. Pretty cool. I didn't know anything like that existed. I rarely drive with AC on, so I had no idea if it would be powerful enough to cool a crew cab & truck bed, too, without freezing the folks in the front seat.

i think if you cracked a window at the back of the cab the vacuum going down the road would help bring the cooler air back. if not maybe a corner fan.  The 2 types of seals i have seen have been inflatable and foam stuck to the cap.

I'm not sure if this would work for the bed of a truck, but it might if you get one long enough and you have a window.
