I was wondering if there's a possibility to add a button or link at the top of the page similar to the "View Unread" link that would list the threads that were posted to during the last 24 hours, with a way to tell whether you've read that thread or not.
I don't know if this forum's software allows that option or not, but I've seen several forums that do. Some forums have an icon next to each thread that changes color after you've read it. Some list unread threads in bold text, and read threads in normal text.
Is that possible, or even desired by anyone but me? 🙂
The Recent Posts column is great, BiXLL, but it only lists the last 15 posts.
The reason I ask is I've come across several cases where I've clicked a link like the View Unread link above and gotten a list of unread threads just fine. After a several minutes of reading through a few threads, I'd like to refresh the list to see if something new has been posted. If I just click the View Unread link again or refresh the page, it only retrieves unread threads posted to since I last logged in - on the refreshed list, everything that was posted before I logged in is gone whether I've read it or not. Having a link or button that would give a person the ability to retrieve all the threads that have been posted to in the last 24 hours - not just since the time they logged in - would be a big help.
One thing I do to work around that problem is use my tabs. Assuming I haven't been on in a few days and there are three pages of unread topcis, I'll click on "View Unread" which will put me on Page 1, then I'll click on Page 2, and then Page 3. I then open all of the messages I want to read on page 3 in tabs, click the browser's back button to go to page 2, open those interesting topics in tabs, click back again to go to page 1 and repeat the tabbing process again. Then I read all of the posts, closing the tab as I finish with a topic.
The reason for going backwards is because the topics get marked as read when you open it in a tab. If you open all of the interesting topics on page 1, then go to page 2, you'll miss some of the topics that would have been at the top of page 2 because they got moved to page one to fill the gaps made by the ones you read from page 1. If you want to go forward, you could just open the three pages of unread topics in tabs or new windows.
I'm using Firefox to do this, but I know IE 8 (and maybe 7) also does something similar. If you're using Firefox, the "Tab Kit" add-on really helps when you have lots of tabs open.
