This doesn't have to be camping related, Vern. As long as it's food related, we're here to please.
Chicken and dumplings is something I haven't made in a long time. But what I did make was cooked chicken, cooled and pulled off the bone. (Some places I've been have boiled/simmered the chicken, saved the liquid for the broth and meat for the filling.)
Anyway, thicken a chicken broth with either arrowroot or cornstarch slurry - a mixture of arrowroot or cornstarch and water - add the meat, bring to boil, drop in dumpling mixture. That is little more than flour, some fat (butter) and liquid. Since the chicken is already cooked, you're only actually cooking the dumpling.
The mixture is very close to that for chicken pot pie. For that you add diced carrots, diced celery and whole peas.
